yeah that stinks. time for an external, or swap out for a bigger one.

never buy a laptop with a 40 gig HD.....i only have 834 MB on mine cause of all my music. and instead of an external hard drive, get a regular hard drive and then just buy a case for it: it's cheaper than an external and they actually run faster

Look on your keyboard and you should see a button that has in same print "Prnt Scrn" then go to a program like MS Paint or Photoshop and hit paste or crtl-v. If you have a laptop you might have a button that has in blue "fn" and find the little blue "Prnt Scrn" at the same time as the "fn" and paste it in a paint program.
Damn that was hard to respond

Has anyone here ever upgraded the hard drive in their laptop before? I know that it's a real pain in the ass to take a laptop apart to service it...but im just wondering if it can even be done.
You know what pisses me off...my laptop is a peice of crap. I mean...it does the job, but it looks like hell, and obviously has some hardware limitations. The thing that really gets me is how cheap laptop computers have become recently. And i mean that in both senses of the word.
I could thro my laptop down the stairs of the CN tower and i could still pick it up and turn it on. Now it seems that these new laptops are really cheaply made. Little pieces here and there that snap off, cracks in the casing, scratches in the painted plastic. They seem to have all just gotten junkier...if thats a word.
Plus...the prices have come down by like at least $500. When i bought my laptop...i got it used for $1200. It was a great deal at the time. Compaq armada 800mhz, dvd rom...no burner tho, and a super nice hi res display. Now tho...with $1200 in hand...i can go down to my local business depot and buy a brand new, top of the line "avertec" (i dont know if thats hows its spelled) for the same kind of cash. >2Ghz, dvd/cdr combo...huge hard drives...ugghhh...it pisses me off just thinking about it. If i had waited 2 years....i could have gotten so much better for my money.
stupid planned obsolescence
On another note...
Has anyone ever used "Dragon Naturally Speaking" before? I just got it. (thats parlty the reason why my HD is full) It's a pretty sweet program. All you do is talk into a microphone...and it types it out as text.
hmm...long post. yay

Matt_French, please dont tell me you do your design work on that?
and also yah ive used dragon speak, i stopped cuz my roomates thought i was weird always talking to myself, but it was pretty sweet, the more u train it the better it does.
and i build lots of computers but never a laptop becuase they are ridiculous, so i would just buy an external if anything....however if your computer is that old then u dont have usb2 or firewire, so an external usb hard drive is going to be slow as crap. buy a new computer!

Greg T, lol...i typed that.
seven11dmd, ya...unfortunately it is all i have to work with. Photoshop runs pretty good...but illustrator is a pig. I would love to buy a new computer...but i dont even have enough money to pay my rent from month to month...let alone to buy a new laptop. Maybe this summer i'll look into it...once i'm working full time again.
what is you opinion on alienware notebooks?

They're pretty good, esp for gfx and games. You can find one that is pretty good standard, and then just upgrade it to almost what alienware specs are (some a little less but aren't too noticeable). That is what my pal did and it was I think 1G less than the alienware it compared to (only a few things lower spec-wise, but they were no concern).
That is what I'd say do instead, save some $$ that way too....for a wakeskate, heh.

alienware is overpriced, id look at something from like www.ibuypower.com or www.hypersonic.com or maybe its www.hypersonicpc.com (its one of those 2)
if you do all this design work what makes u want to stick with PC? (i use my pc for all my graphic work too, but now that im taking typography classes I am in dire need for a mac, but we do have a couple lovely mac labs around campus, including one that is all the new g5s, which are sweet).
anyways i stick with pc becuase im a gamer and therefore a loser.

seven11dmd, i have seriously thought about a mac. but i just dont think i can bring myself to start all over again. all the software and games i have for PC would just be useless. I think it would be too much work to start over from scratch collecting software and shizzle. If i had more money...i would prolly buy both...that way i could get the best of both. But i dont see that happening until im done university. So for now...i think ill have to stick with PC.
You seem to know what you are talking about...so what PC laptop would you recommend? I have become really cynical about all these new laptops that have recently popped up on the market causing the prices to drop. Its all this new crap coming out of China...that i wouldnt trust farther than i could throw. And personally...i feel that HP and Compaq have really dipped in quality recently as well. Thats why i was curious about alienware. I dont really know much about them. Any opinions on Sony? I have a sony NX70V PDA...and i am pretty impressed with its performance...plus, some of those new VAIO laptops look pretty well made.

Matt_French, i would move away from any PCs or laptops that you buy in a store. Online retailers like listed in an above post, that do nothing but computers, make much better quality machines. (i.e. i also mean stay away from dell and gateway if you can).
