First time i tried winching was November 2005 at the first Norcal Convergence. I couldnt even get up though i didnt know how to deep water start at the time.
Spring 2006 is my first real winch experience at the 2nd convergence

my buddy and his dad built one in 06 i think. it was a 13hp honda w/ centrifugal clutch. the gearing was wrong so no deep water starts, but it was awesome. even took it to wanee music fest and winched the black water river. the thing weighed like 200lbs

I built my first one in 2005, and we used it in april 05 for the first time! took me forever to get up behind the thing! I now enjoy winching spots better than riding behind my boat!

I don't remember exactly but I want to say the summer of 2006? It was at an event behind a surf-shop in Jacksonville. I think a couple people who are on this forum were there (Kyle was for sure, don't remember who else).
I became a little obsesed from that point. It took a few years to get the resources together but I finally built my own by late spring 2009 and still love it.

labellethrasher, I know who that is only because you told me about him and as small of a world as it is, I met him on the LFTAA in 05.
I never got a chance to winch because it broke...but it was when labellethrasher, skate filly and gregeo and I tried to winch some dirty river in the spring. in the end I was pulled through a puddle behind an ATV...not a full on loss.

I was camping at Bartlett Lake with the ASU WakeDevils (now the Xdevils) a few summers ago and they had a haggard little winch, when it was my turn to ride the winch broke down on my first pull attempt. Thats when I was determined to build my own, my first session with my winch, my spool collapsed, I went back to the drawing board and have been building quality winches ever since, I have a 20' Four Winns but I too prefer winching to boating

The first time I winched was behind an original ReWind out here in California that ollieshuvitz brought. It was in bum füçk no where Los Baños for a Gator Boards/ Big Block productions event. Like mitch said, I had never done deep water starts so I didnt really get up but once I learned that, I put some hours in with that winch.
It's also the first time I met/ seen other wakeskaters (besides meeting Grubb n aReed once) and namely met what I can say is my best friend/ brother. So that first time winching holds some deep memory with me.
And that first generation ReWind is still my favorite winch to drive/ ride with regardless if its a 5hp with a CC.

man are there some great stories here......motel.....nice thread ...................count sheets....what er those 300's
it sounds like most everybodys first experience is rough.....and thats what winching is....its raw dog........i love it.....like this toy lion i found along the shoreline one day it has claws, is very hairy, and roars with a ferocity that may disturb ordinary men.
maybe back in 05 we got a grinch at the shop.....the day i chose was a perfect cold rainy janruary day that it came fresh out the crate.....i was amazed at how long the rope was, we seshed a canal outback ........frekin raw dog......next day we built a hit ........it was on.
we got this new spot when i say duck blind tiki bar i mean it
