I've been wanting to bring this up for a while because I talk about it all the time. Why is it that I have such vivid memories of wakeskating/boarding? I mean, I remember everything, if you name a trick, I can tell you where I was, what time of the year, what board I was riding, how many people were in the boat, what spot on the lake and which direction we were going, etc, etc. And I don't mean three years ago, I mean almost 20 years ago, way before the digital age.
On the other hand, I don't remember any other sports. For example, I played soccer in college and scored the winning goal in a major game but I can't remember a single thing about that game other than the outcome. Skating and surfing aren't as bad, but more blurred memories of sessions or trips.
But I can vividly remember the first time I got pulled off the dock on a wakeboard almost 20 years ago.
Anyone else that way or am I crazy? What is it about being on the water that sticks with me? |

Man I've wondered this at times. I remember like every first big trick I landed, but not only the feeling but the exact spot in the river or canal... its bizarre, but i love it. I can just close my eyes and remember my first back big from like 5 years ago or my first vflip from 2 years ago, or just my first shuv on a skim board!
Also its great remember all the fun trips and shizzle youve done over the years relating to wakeskating, meeting people and dropping hammers with them... good stuff!
Great thread. |

ive only been water dancing for 2 years...but i can recall every skateboard comp. and big trick ive ever landed...even as far back as my first drop in on a bowl in 1990....i think its because you see that trick so many times in your head befor it happens that you can close your eyes and see it...and then when it happens and you get that feeling its stuck there...like its acid burned in your brain....just like sex's or some good tree's....just puts you there _________________ "a bad day behind a handle is better then a good day behind a desk"..... |

science research says that in part it has to do with the neurons in the hippocampus and the amygdala (parts of the brain) being in sync, which probably doesnt mean much to most of us (myself included)blah blah blah.
but another part has to do with the fact that the first kickflip or back big you landed, you most likely replayed that trick in your mind over and over, experiencing that "high" mentally again and again. and then when you went to bed you kept thinking about about it and then in your dreams your brain did its thing "sorting out your events of the day" making that trick a prominent memory.
SEAMAN i bet if you did something amazing like a backflip headbutt to score a goal you would remember it just as vivdly as that first big wakeskate trick. it may also be that practicing a wakeskate trick a bunch and then finally landing it is much more rewarding to you personally than scoring a soccer goal, i know it is for me. |
