the guy that built it said he decided to go the golf cart route b/c the batteries weigh 400lbs and if it didn't work he could sell the cart, but it did work. while riding alone might be super safe, i know i'd do it. it could definitely be done in a smaller version with lithium ion batteries, but would be so expensive and costly to design.
