Yes, Im bumping a (glorious) year old thread.
Nick, since you've had your rig for around a year now, what are some of the pro and cons you've found as the owner of a houseboat?
I'm considering living an amazing hobo life of my own.
TIA. _________________ Your mom is my favorite knee boarder. |

W, When I started this project, I thought it might get a little old or a little repetitive or inconvenient for real daily living by this point...
but it's seriously just gotten better and better as time goes on. Being on the houseboat is the best.
Whether I'm out there with 20 friends going wild or I'm laying in my hammock reading, whether I'm coming back in from an epic day wakeskating with the grommets, or just sitting on the edge of the roof by myself strumming love to the sunset with my six-string, life is good on the houseboat...
The gentle rocking puts me to sleep at night & the sun coming over the islands with the smell of saltwater is what wakes me up in the morning. I'm smiling before my eyes are even open. I love everything about saltwater. I like hearing a school of jack tearing up some bait when I'm peeling an orange in the morning. I like seeing dolphins and manatees when I go out on the back porch to do the dishes. I like laying in my hammock and closing my eyes to the bright sunlight and listening intently to all the different kinds of birds on the grassflats at low tide. Blue herons, white egrets, roseate spoonbills, seagulls, ospreys, pelicans, and the frigates way up high...
There's a living reef growing on the underside of my ship. You can see it from anywhere in the living room. These days I'd much rather shoot fish with my camera, but I can't say no to the freshest fish tacos the world has ever known. Especially if pineapple is getting itself involved.... There's orange juice in the fridge.
The past couple weeks I've been having a small group of friends over at night. We play old school card games by candle light and put my ipod on shuffle.
There's an old abondoned houseboat across the bay that sunk a few months ago and it's still sitting there half-submerged. County says I can salvage their waterslide and metal railings this week. I'll get pictures once it's all set up...
Houseboat living out here has 2 seasons. Water is warm enough to swim season and water is not warm enough to swim season. When you wake up on the houseboat, apart from noticing how well you slept, your first impulse is to jump into the water and start the day right. In the winter time, there's a lot more solo time on the houseboat which is something I can enjoy. Summer time is a time for all day houseboat parties and night-time swims in the bioluminescence. Winter is a time for diving into books and wearing jeans&jackets on the sea-doo to get out to the ship. Summer is when I get texts saying "Sunday funday!!!!houseboattime" and winter is when I stock up the pantry and don't come to shore for weeks at a time. Music plays a big role in both times.
Blue sky days, fiery sunsets, afternoon thunderstorms & morning fogs.
After a long day of shredding, there's nothing that I've found as calming as a windless rainstorm a few hours into a warm summer night...
The neighborhood, shot from the dock where I drop in the sea-doo... You can see me way out in the country.
Working really hard for something you want & creating reality out of ideas and visions is a type of fun I experienced in the construction process.
The end result became the opposite... Effortless living was never so fulfilling.
Simplifying is the act of getting rid of sh¡t you don't need in your life. Living on a houseboat is a good way to experiment with the idea
I'm not too sorry that the reply was overkill, I just started typing about it and everything started pouring out. I wanted to post something more than "yeah it's sweet still"... Each one of these photos have so much meaning to me because they do what good photos are supposed to, they bring me right back to that second in space and time. For all the good times I'm having now, I'm so happy that I'll have these photos (and thousands more) to look back on and remember...
but yeah, I f--king love living on my houseboat. And wakeskating. And a bunch of other stuff.
