I just moved to a new apartment with my g/f. I have a desktop, laptop and my g/f has a mac laptop. I want to connect them all and be able to share files and use the same printer wirelessly. My router came with some 7 day trial of some crap I'd have to buy for 70 bux, and then id have to buy a different one to be compatible with the Mac, figures. What im getting at is that i dont want to buy that crap, so does anyone know any free networking software for the things mentioned above. I searched but i want to get some input, maybe some1 on here uses some and has some input. Thank you all! oh and thanks for whoever suggested Avast Anti Virus, its been working great !

What kind of router? Third party networking software is highly overrated, anyway, just allow Mac and Windows to configure everything. I am positive that all you need is a network card on each network device (PC or Mac), and you should be able to connect to your router, no problem.

As far as a network printer, that is something I can't stand explaining.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Install-a-printer-on-a-home-network

The key is research, just use the information superhighway we know to be called the "internet" and you are golden.

I believe I may have suggested Avast. =)

gporter, all the comps are connected to the router. I want software that can let me be able to share files between our computers, and all wirelessly print as well through the same printer. An example of what i need is: Network Magic Pro, which i am using now as a 7 day trial, here it is:

-=AlexXx=-, don't buy network magic pro.
is it a wireless router? if so connect the printer to the router and set it up that way. you could also set the printer up on one of the computer, like the desktop, and share the printer across the network. when it comes to sharing files across the three you should have no problem seeing files from pc to pc. and from my experience macs normally see and read fat32 formatted data. pc's have a hard time understanding os x formatted data.

could be wrong, you should list a little more info about the setups you've got. like what operating systems your running and is the mac an intel based chip, does it have parallels or something similar?

a way i use to cheat and share files was to just use a p2p like limewire or something. its an already established network that you can share across whether your at you home network or anywhere with a connect to the internets

JamesBoardr, Thank you for your response. No WAY do i plan on buying that crap haha. It is a wireless router, i just got it its a Linksys N basic home router or w/e. I have not unpacked the printer yet so ill have to see it if i can plug it into the router, i didn't know printers had Ethernet plugs. Ill try it when i do get it all wired up, first i need to get a table or something from Ikea to put it all on, currently its all scattered on the floor.

As for sharing files i want to at least between my lap top and desktop (both Dells are running Windows XP. How would i go about looking for and retreaving the files, since you say it shouldn't be a problem.

Seems like messing with the Mac is just not going to be an option than, which is not surprising because they never work right. I dont think i want to use Lime wire, because than wont i have to just download it from myself? Im talking about sharing movies, shows, and music. With this trial of Magic whatever, i can simply open files from other computers like they are on one, its pretty amazing. Maybe i can find a torrent of the full version and pirate it... hmmm.

It's really not surprising at all that you can't figure out how to set up a network. Laughing

start>control panel> network> set up home network and follow the onscreen instructions.

As far as your printer, you have to have a wireless router to be able to use multiple wireless computers . Beyond that you would need a regular Lynksis router to plug your computers into and then into the printer. I have Verzon so they have given me one and then follow the instructions given with the printer to set up different computers to that. Not sure how to share files between Mac and PC.

Hope this helps

gporter, I really am not trying to hate on them, but its not my fault they are so incompatible.

This thread is not about macs vs pc, because we all know macs are inferior. I just want to get some input on networking. Rolling Eyes

Have you thought about checking in with Google? There are probably a TON of different articles that you could find by searching "how to setup a home network" or something similar. To be completely honest, the reason why I haven't helped you at all with this is because I'm sure there are hundreds of different articles that explain it waaaaay better than I could off the top of my head at midnight. I don't mean to be a dick about this at all. If I was over there I would be willing to help out, but I just don't setup networks often enough to give you as detailed a play-by-play as you'll want so that everything is setup properly and securely.

Laughing Laughing Alex, you're amazing. Why are you amazing? Because you remind me of my 81 year old grandmother.

"How did you get it to do that?! Well... It definitely didn't do that a minute ago."

Laughing Laughing

You're right though, OSX is SO incompatible with Windows! It totally has nothing to do with you not being computer literate enough to set it up. Nothing.

MAC is an amazing machine, it's just not a PC. People tend to not like learning new things, so it's easy to hate something that you know nothing about.

The truth is, PC has a ton of issues, and before Win7, there wasn't an OS released by Windows worth using since Windows 95. (Windows XP is only loved by PC users because it's what they know, see above.)

This is coming from a dedicated PC user, and I myself, used to dislike MAC. This was before I realized how much of a "well oiled machine" it really was.

At the end of the day, it's all a personal preference, as it should be.

edit: There really is a ton of information out there, just gotta do some extensive research.

Weren't you like 5 years old when Win 95 came out? What reasons do you have for Win 95 being more 'worth using' than XP?

Second. What's wrong with XP? It was a quantum leap over 2000, ME or even 98+.

Hell I thought Windows 98 was much better than 95 in terms of what I was doing even back then.

I use XP on my desktop, but I'd say the biggest issue has nothing to do with the OS itself. It's not a bad operating system, but the switch from XP to Vista was just brutal...

scott, My age doesn't really matter, neither should yours. I do extensive research on the subject, this is basically my career field. We'll just leave it at that.

You were right on target to recommend google, because that is where I go to find anything, in life. haha

I'd say I'm not really a big fan of 32 bit, because your system is subject to crash if you don't know what you are doing... 64 bit, while it has compatibility issues, has the kernel to handle what I need.

I hear Windows 8 is going to have 128 bit os... crazy!

You can't knock an OS because it's moved on from that familiar feeling you had using the old OS. In order to move on sometimes you have to break away from that old familiar feel and onto a new one that will support new and more advanced features. But I'm sure you know this because you do so much research on this topic.

Age is the difference between knowing for yourself through hands-on usage and having to reading others' opinions on the matter because you were too young to have spent enough meaningful time with the OS.

And I'm still waiting for you to give me some reasons why Win 95 is more 'worth using' than XP.
