Alright so it's that time of the month- the part where I get extremely bored because work is slow and I have way too much time on my hands. So, I'm going to start fabricating a winch for some general use (Mostly beach winching here on Long Island- so mostly land starts), with hopes of having it done within 3 weeks of starting it.

Just wondering what suggestions, if any, you guys have.

I have a friend's go-kart that he wrecked, so I have a TAV and a 3.5 HP engine laying around. Obviously I'll take the TAV, but would a 3.5 get the job done? I'm searching for a 6, because that seems to be the common size from generators, water pumps, snowblowers, etc. I have the sprocket, but not quite sure the tooth count, as I haven't looked at it.

As far as the frame goes- I was actually thinking about modifying a generator frame, considering it's small and compact. I don't have a hitch receiver, being as I just sold my STi and got a Cobalt SS, but I have a trunk finally, and I know from experience a generator can fit easily.

Any suggestions on the spool? I know the ID has a lot to do with the speed, but I was wondering what would be the best way to fab one up.

I was looking at this for line, considering it has a 4470lb breaking strength. http://www.esportsonline.com/?sitemid=NECAG50X&websrc=froogle_NECAG50X
They make a 3/8" rope that has a 2575lb breaking strength..would that be any better, considering it's only $49?

Any help would be awesometastic.

The line your looking at is overkill. Check out triple braided 3/16" polypropylene line, it works well and is very cheap.

I would just suggest spending a lot of time ready posts on this forum (winching section). I am also going to be building a winch soon and have been spending hours reading other posts on here. I will say that you need at least a 6.5 hp engine and a tav 2. I am going to get my spool from new wakeskates(see their site for info) cuz its not much cheaper to build your own spool. There is a place to get line for 14 cents a foot (seattle marine I think). There are frame plans on here as well. I learned everything so far from this site. Just start reading and going back several pages(old info is good info) and you will get all the info you need. Very Happy This site is tight Cool

Yeah I've been doing that too, also looking at other people's designs on iWinchGlobal, just to get an idea for mine.

I basically have everything, the only thing I need really is a spool.
Old go-karts are perfect...they have everything you need basically lol.

Especially hubs, axles, sprockets, TAVs, engine plates, etc.

And it's all fo FREE!
..>Which is good cause I'm broke at the moment.

joeyskids, Sounds like you're already well on your way.

winchskating.com is a great resource as well even though the forum is pretty much dead. There is a lot of great information on them though and I mostly used info on there (and a few random posts on this site) to get mine done.
