Yes I know who George Carlin is, he used to be pretty funny. And yes his explanation of the 10 commandments was so far from intelligent that its hardly worth arguing.
Theres not really anything the back up his assumetion that the 10 commandments were created for reasons of political control. The ten commandments resonate within biblical context. So by his saying that there even was such thing as the ten commandments but they were man made, and their purpose was for control, logically implies that he has to believe at least some of the bible is true (even if it is historically).
If he didn't believe that the ten commandments are purely fictional then he wouldn't be trying to argue their function and (or malfunction). So basically, the idea to attempt to aruge atheism through the ten commandments is logically flawed. Or he's not really trying to bring up strong points just make a funny skit.
Edited: to the sake of logic.

there's a difference between an enlightening, intellegent debate/coversation, and trying to belittle others, while pushing your own beliefs that you claim to be correct without anymore proof than others have...

kyle13, to argue against something doesn't mean that he has to believe any of it is true... only that the person he is arguing to believes it is true... all he was doing was proving a point by discrediting the opponent in this case the bible... it is a widely used technique and he went about it very well and quite funny...
i mean if someone believed santa claus was real and i didn't, i would argue against things about santa to prove that it is a impossibility that he accomplishes what that person believed... it doesn't mean i believe part of the story is true...lol
kyle sorry man your argument for the sake of logic was quite weak... nearly as weak as carlin's commandment argument... only difference is carlin was making a joke and not an argument _________________ PAVT since '05/'06 |

JeffKnox, to say that the ten commandments were invented the in order to influence people and that there was 10 instead of 9 or 11 “in order sound official" is speculation since there are no eye witness accounts other than the bible. It’s just Carlin’s opinion of the origin. It’s not like there were other documents around that would be able to state otherwise. Therefore the only place one could find any evidence of misuse of these commandments would be further in the Bible. If one thinks that the bible is a flawed document that is untrue, how can you use that same document to provide proof for the argument.
If the bible is just comprised of a persons (christians would say they were inspired by God) account of events, its hard to see how someone’s ideas of how they think it really went down would pose an argument to why Christians believe the bible in the first place. Obviously an atheist wouldn’t believe that bible is inspired by God (since they don’t believe one exists), but Christians do. This makes it impossible to “prove” anything. Its not an argument. lol
On top of that he didn't even give what seemed to me to be correct meanings of all of the commandments. This may have been difference in doctrine but to me it just seemed like he twisted the meaning to fit what he thought was funny.
What did he say that discredited the bible, I think I must have missed that. |

“Folks, it’s time to evolve ideas. That’s why we’re troubled. You know why our institutions are failing us, the church, the state, everything’s failing? It’s because, um, — they’re no longer relevant. We’re supposed to keep evolving. Evolution did not end with us growing opposable thumbs. You do know that, right? There’s another 90 percent of our brains that we have to illuminate.
It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money, a choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one.
We are the facilitators of our own creative evolution.
The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people."

ZackFL(BRE), because they aren't the same?
what is your reasoning for you pushing your beliefs over, and while criticizing others, without any proof that your belief is correct over theirs? _________________ Team Dream Sleds
