Yet it's the rush of water into the sinuses or ear canal that invites the parasite into the brain. It is more likely to catch the parasite during skiing or other active water sports, but contracting it still considered rare.

Rare but something to think about...

Is naegleria fowleri (brain eating amoebas present super warm water) the same as bacterial meningitis?

Glad to hear you made it through that, though!

Bacterial Meningitis can only be passed along through carriers. So obviously I came in contact with a carrier a the surf expo. I didnt drink, eat, kiss, or smoke behind anyone so the only thing I can think of is that a carrier sneezed or coughed around me and I took in the bacteria. This disease is so scary because it starts off with flu like symtoms. If you wait to long after these symptoms start its only a matter of time before your time on earth is done. Put it like this I was extremely blessed.

2Fifty2, what happened after the flu like symptoms? At some point does your skin start to break open?

Again, with all of the details you've provided, it's good to hear you're OK and shredding your LTD.

The wounds that I had were the spots/rash that came up right before I was aiflifted. This rash is the last stage of bacterial meningitis before your organs shut down. The Dr's put me on an antibiotic to pull my blood back to my core to help save my organs but that left my upper and lower extremities (hands and feet mainly) depleated with circulation. So basically I had frostbite. Look up pics on yahoo or google for bacterial meningitis cases. Some people are left on that antibiotic for too long and they are the ones with amputations. Basically the extremities turn black from lack of blood flow. I will post some pics soon!!!

Some notes from class...
Pathophysiology-(how disease progresses)
Nasopharyngeal colonization
(Immunoglobulin A protection reduced)

Enters the bloodstream

Avoids the host defense mechanisms
(i.e. encapsulated organisms)

Pathogen crosses the blood-brain barrier
(adhesins or transversing tight junctions)

Poor host defense mechanisms in CNS
(extensive bacterial replication & INFLAMMATION)

Inflammatory response:

Bacterial cell death → release of inflammatory mediators (IL-1, TNF-α ) leading to recruitment of WBCs (CSF pleocytosis)

prostaglandins, and other substances
cerebral edema, increased intracranial pressure

Increased then decreased cerebral blood flow

Hernia of the brain and death possible!!!!

The scary part about this infection is that the body has poor defenses in the CNS and many antibiotics do not penetrate the blood brain barrier.
You probably received Vancomycin or an aminoglycoside antibiotic but I have never heard of the antibiotics themselves leading to amputation. Their toxicities usually involve kidney failure or hearing loss.

scott a, not necessarily the problem with ameobas is if they do travel to the brain the can encyst or as the name suggests, eat the brain. This type of infection I would imagine would be treated differently but since ameobas are protazoa you would have to use antiprotazoal agents and I'm not to sure that many of them can get into the CNS and target the infection.

TTUFAN24, very true, we weren't really designed to let anything past the BBB, luckily in meningitis the BBB is compromised so drugs can penetrate a little easier, this effect can usually be boosted by co-administration with rifampin.
