|
|
So I got the winch built but now I need to get my gearing right. What we had on hand was a 11 and a 56 tooth sprocket. With my spool of inner diamater of 4" I know this won't work ( we tried this weekend).
So what I wanted to ask, what gearing do I need. Will a 11/72 tooth work with my 4 inch spool?
Also a bit more about my setup is a 8.5hp Robin/Subaru motor with a centrifugal clutch. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,
Ryan |

I think 6 inch is the magic number on the spool diamater with that gearing setup. not sure if that will make a difference though. Might get the same effect by going with a bigger spool gear like you said. Not sure ive never built one with a centrifugal clutch. _________________ "Confucius say, man who stand on toilet high on pot" |

yeah I have heard the magic number is 6" spool and 1 to 6 gear ratio.
So if I have 4" spool and a ~1.1 to 7 (11 to 72) gear ratio what would my speed be???? _________________ http://trihawk.fotki.com

| My setup is a 8 hp, TAV2(12 T), 72 T Sprocket and 7.5" diameter Spool and it pulls pretty damn good. |

Ill talk to lo gnar. He is the king of the centrifugal clutch winch if you wanna stick with that. He's building those yankmeister winch's.... Its a 11 hp engine with a cen, but you no its reputation as the leg breaker. That thing is stupid fast.

Here is what i do...
6INCH SPOOL CENTER ALWAYS
But....
When im using a #41 chain i use a 10 tooth comet clutch and a 60 tooth drive sprocket. Resulting in 6:1 ratio
When i use a #35 chain i use a 12 tooth clutch and a 80 tooth sprocket.
Resulting in a 6.6:1 ratio
As your Drive sprocket goes down in size you pick up speed but lose torq. But with a cen. clutch you really need that torq to do a deep water start. If you got a spot where you can find 6 inches of water to take off in your good no matter what.
With that subaru motor you will see a little lever under the tank. Once your at full throttle you can push that lever back and get almost another 1000 rpms outta it.
Also as a test you should pull all your rope off and wrap a bunch of card board or something around your spool center to make it a couple inches bigger. That will increase your speed. You can make almost any gear ratio work by getting the spool center the right size.
And about the "leg breaker" thats all about skirting your rails... SKIRT YOUR RAILS!!!! Its pretty much as important as putting a condom on...
