Man they were bad looking back then, but you have to appreciate the purpose behind their sign. Back in 1890, women had practically no rights, by this time black men could vote but no woman could, women got less pay than a man, worked longer more harsh hours, so many were forced into prostitution to make ends meet. It was pretty shiznackle, so a lot of women like the ones in the picture above (middle/upper class who could affort to take a stand) supported the temperance movement because they felt women and their children were particularly vulnerable to the effects of drunkenness. They were fully dependent on their husband's crappy wages, so the women and their children suffered when their husbands/dads went out to get drunk. Prostitution, wasteful spending, wife and child abuse, unemployment, industrial accidents. There are plenty of reasons why alcohol back in the day was absolutely leading to the destruction of society.

You should thank women like the ones in that picture though, the Temperance movement and christian associations had alcoholism reclassified as a disease, rather than a sin, and poverty as a cause of alcoholism, not the result. This alcoholic movement also led to higher paying wages for women, better working conditions (ones that wouldn't force many into the saloons to a life of prostitution), more rights like child care and better training for women.

taku, it also created a business for organized crime to grow around and a lot of angry sober people, not to mention its ineffectiveness due to the completely obscure punishments for the possession or sale of alcohol that were rarely enforced

but anyways, i wonder what would have happened to megan fox if she were around in that time period haha

Something else interesting, didn't it take like 5 to 10 minute pre 1900s to take a photo? I think it did and the people having their picture taken had to remain still for a long ass time.
