I have to say that the shining is probably one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. The lady character, shelly long, I think, she was super annoying. but jack nicholson? WOAH!

I still won't watch the exorcist.

I would rank silence of the lambs on this list as well. Not so much as like a halloween-y creepy or anything, but it's inspired by wisconsin's own ed gein (as was psycho, and I think one other--psycho is a good film as well).

Oh, and I think that of all of the friday the 13th films ever made, the first one was the best (and creepiest).

Some of those newer films look creepy as well--the strangers and quarrantine. I'm not very good about going to the movies, but I'd like to see those two at some point.

I think that my favorite scary movie would have to be what lies beneath. But I love silence of the lambs and the Halloweens also.

electricsnow, After watching Scary Movie 2, (parody of The Exorcist) the watching the real exorcist, it kind lf ruined for me. Still one of the best horror films.

Still haven't completely understood The Shining, didn't really scare me that much. But I don't think it helps that I've only seen bits and pieces of it.

Some of the old Hellraiser movies freaked me out. Another is The Leprachaun.

Jaws still scares the crap out of me and I change the channel if it's on TV. Thanks mom and dad for ruining my enjoyment of the open ocean as a child! (unless reef diving in less than 30ft water Wink )

Resident Evil was pretty scary to me. I go out of my way to avoid these type movies, so my scary movie radar might be out of whack.

I thought the Exorcist girl was under my bed for a month, because I watched it with my Dad when I was like eight. My Mom got pissed when she found out, Laughing

The thing is, at one time there was an exorcism performed on 20/20, so basically demonic possession is kind of real, and that is why I did not want to watch the exorcist. Plus there was all of that drama with ouiji boards and how you were't supposed to use them alone..AHHH! I don't even want to talk about it anymore! Laughing

Anyway, some of those films are loosely based (or something) on true experiences--isn't poltergeist one of those?

anyway, another weird movie I thought of is Freaks. I originally saw it on a bravo TV countdown of some scary movies. This film is old--it's in black and white--but they use real "circus freaks" like torso dudes, really tiny people, etc etc. They exact revenge on a douchy lady that's trying to milk the "tiny dude" for everything he's worth.

Also, there were some other really creepy films mentioned on that list. One is japanese or something--I think it's called "interview" or something like that? Some guy goes on an interview and he ends up getting tourtured by this lady...just really creepy stuff.

for the genre, I think they did a pretty good job with the scream series. It's not the scariest film I've ever seen, but I didn't take it as a total joke, either.

and I don't remember much of jaws, but I saw clips of it this past summer and I could see how so many people would say that it ruined the water for them. Laughing one of the sequels annoyed me, though. Two gals were waterskiing in the ocean and the lady who was driving the boat was just driving like a d-bag...just totally swinging the wheel from left to right. I lost all sympathy at that point.

electricsnow, I've heard of "Interview". Hear it is one of the most twisted movies ever.

The Exorcist scared the crap out of me when I was little. Think it was the fact that I'd seen that Geraldo special on devil worshiping right before it and they talked about demonic posession in it so it gave it a realness. Another one that really frightened me when I was little was the original Nightmare On Elm Street. Remember being terrified when I saw it back in '85 as a 7year old. Funny thing is though, by'86 when Freddy's Revenge came out on video I was totally hyped on the series of movies. Funny what a difference a year can make, haha. Wasn't scared by another movie until, as I stated above, I saw the Exorcist.

On a side note, I did have a cool chance encounter with Robert Englund(Freddy) when I was living out in California. Got to talk to him a bit and he was super cool, just a mellow dude. Will say though, he is pretty scary looking even without the Freddy makeup on, hahaha.

growing up, these vids were crazy-

Critters
The People Under the Stairs
A Nightmare on Elm Street

I think Jaws is one of the best scary movies out there. Maybe not one of the scariest, but definitely scary. You only see the shark a hand full of times but still you are able to get sucked in to the movie and cant stop watching. What also helps is the actors. The acting is some of the best I have yet to see. The dialog is so real. "I can do anything, Im the chief of police" Very Happy

electricsnow, ive got The interview on dvd. Its pretty crazy. This creepster guy at my last job gave me a copy. It was pretty good. The guy interviews ladies for a movie, but really its for him to pick a new wife. Its twisted what this lady does to him. (Cuts his feet off with piano wire) Just hearing it was intense. The Japanese can come up with some crazy stuff.

JAM, the piano wire part was something the breifly showed on the Bravo countdown thing. Seriously insane, because I remember seeing the clip and the lady looked like she was enjoying her role in the torture. It is weird becuase some of that stuff doesn't seem so far fetched. But maybe i"m living in a state of paranoia. Shocked

feelnjstfine, when I was a young lass the nightmare on elm street films creeped me out as well. Seriously, seeing that guy without his make up was kind of a comfort just to see that freddy WON'T visit you in your dreams. The shape of his face is pretty similar to the charcter, though.
