....
alright any body that knows anything, help.
The dealer said we will need a top end rebuild, how hard is this going to be to do our selves? we know the basics and can learn easily.
dealer said we have to replace the rings, possibly more. He quoted us $1000-$3000, so we would like to do it our selves and have a few questions.
does the engine have to be removed?
what parts would i be looking at?
any general pointers?
sites we should look at?
Thanks guys.

if any of you have diffrent ideas on what the problem is, here is the story.
we are getting a ton of exhaust out the back, and we are getting exhaust in the engine compartment( exhaust leak?) running with the seat off it works perfectly fine( getting air into the engine) running with just the front seat o and back seat off works okay, but if you idle it bogs down when you give it gas, but again running at speed it works fine. We figure its sucking in exhaust instead of clean air( makes sense) so where would we go from there. The dealer seemed stumped and said rebuild the top end an replace the rings, something to do with an oil leak.

Help guys!

if you go to http://www.sbtontheweb.com/index.htm, you can buy a new motor for your ski that comes with an unconditional 1 year warranty. also just doing a swap might be easier than a rebuild.

first fix your exhaust leak and go from there...
start with the obvious and small things before you go spending your cash. Exclamation

TannerC, rebuilding isn't that hard. first look up the internet and see if you can find some service or repair manuals. or google how to change piston rings (which i assume you mean by "rings"). someone that has worked on a motorcycle engine (ricer - 4cyl) might be helpfull too.
if you're really going to work on that engine yourself i strongly suggest that you know all the tightening torques of them bolts! you can do a lot of damage overtightening those cylinder head bolts.
