no shizzle, I brought that magazine up north with me this past week. Laughing Beg, borrow and steal was also bad to the bone because that's the first video that was primarily wakeskating, or wakeskating took the majority of the coverage.

And grubb was (and still is, to me) the man back then. Consider the talent that was present, and there are three names that are givens/standouts: thomas, byerly and drew (and I think you can include tim kovacich in that list). Grubb was a wakeboarder and pretty much came out of nowhere and was straight up killing it. From an outsider's perspective, it felt like byerly had a clique of sorts, and grubb managed to find his way into that clique, which I consider to be a pretty big deal. It's like a quote from that article said, nobody'd inspired him [byerly] like that in years. And brian always rode differently too, ie lots of wake to wake stuff, major league rails, and very little lip action. He also had the cover shot on the first issue of alliance and was alliance's first rider of the year...he did some amazing things on his wakeskate.

Also, grubb was the first wakeskater I saw ride in person and it was seriously one of the most fun days of my life. It was a part of those summer demos the companies used to do...I dont' know if that year was the "all or nothing tour" but it was in 2002. And I have to say, he was more than friendly. I was a super nerd back then (as I am now) and I brought some of my wake memorabilia to the shop because those guys have always been cool to me (fort fremont marine). Anyway, he took a look at some of it, like the first issue of WBM and such, and was just really cordial. I'm not a grubb expert, but I've heard from other riders that he is shy. Perhaps that is what you are confusing his standoff-ish ness for. But when I met him, I thought he was a really great ambassador for wakeskating, and he had a lot of stoke for every rider--wakeskater or wakeboarder--that jumped in that boat that day.

"Beg, Borrow & Steal" is a damn good movie. Remember how I used to watch it before a set and then be superstoked out on the water all day... Actually it was one of the first movies that showcased really good rail action. It was damn progressive at that time!

Nostalgia...... Glasses
