1800-jason, Alot of people don't use the search button, even though it's pretty much guaranteed that someone has/had your same concern. _________________ ~ www.integrity-wake.com ~ www.iwinchglobal.com ~ |

SamHill, said it very nicely.
That forum is not used as much anymore, but there is a shed load of information on there.
Spool designs
Frame designs
Gear Ratio information
Pro's/Cons of TAV's Vs clutches
Everything you'll need is on there. Plus you can still get replies to questions, just might take a couple of days.
Happy building, its good fun! |

It's tough to DIY when you've never winched before, and those sites seem pretty dedicated to the "I already know what I'm doing" winching enthusiast...
Any sites for educating people who don't know anything about winching, but are intrigued and want to get started?
On the gallery, there was a whole diverse mix of winches people built, and I've got lots of the tools I'd need (even a MIG welder). But I have no idea how a brake would work, a throttle... and I imagine they wouldn't be controlled from where you are way 600' out getting pulled in!
In other words, there were terms on that site that are far from unfamilar - but surprising in some cases to see in the description of a winch. And even if you did know, sizing things properly would take experience without a how-to site to teach the basics. So does such a thing exist? |

geolemon, winching is a two man operation. one to run the winch, the other to ride then switch. i'd just buy your frame from bullet lines, and maybe your spool, but dont let them talk you into having the whole winch built. _________________ "I said take me to the sea, cause that is where I want to be. I might have an old snowblower here, that has a side shaft motor, that might work and take a bit of the cost out of the project - that would be cool.
Maybe not the safest thing from a drowning or injury standpoint..
But I could picture an automatic braking system using a ball on the line passing through a gate as a trigger, also cutting the ignition?
Maybe a 1-man winch is bad from a safety standpoint, lol |
