Panic after 'Franken-fish' that is deadlier than a piranha is caught in Britain

Last updated at 13:40pm on 19th February 2008

A savage fish deadlier than a piranha that has killed people has been caught on British shores for the first time.

The giant snakehead - so called because of its long body and fearsome teeth - was caught by an angler in Lincolnshire.

Dubbed the "gangster" of the fish world, it eats everything it comes across and has even been reported to kill people.

The monster, which is from south-east Asia, can also "crawl" on land and survive out of water for up to four days.

It already has a fearsome predatory reputation in other parts of the world.
In the U.S., the fish has been described as a "FrankenFish" and "like something out of a horror film".

Andy Alder, from Lincoln, caught a 2ft snakehead while using a sprat as bait for pike on the River Witham near North Hykeham.

He said: "It had a gob full of razor-sharp teeth. To be honest it looked terrifying."

Anglers and conservationists are panic-stricken after its discovery in Britain.

An Environment Agency source said: “The reaction was, 'Oh s***'. This is the ultimate invasive species — if it starts breeding here it's a disaster."
Ben Weir, of the fishing magazine Angler's Mail, said: "In all my time of working within fishing I have never heard so many concerned voices.

"These guys are the real deal and have attacked humans whilst protecting their young.

"Everyone within the angling and fishery world have been left gobsmacked by its capture."

Experts have examined pictures of the fish and confirmed it was the predator.

It is on a blacklist of species that cannot be imported into the UK.

There are fears it could have been smuggled in for an aquarium and then illegally released.

Catching the vicious fish is considered great sport in Asia.

One of the world's leading angling guides, Jean Francois-Helias of Angling Adventures Thailand, has put his customers onto brilliant snakehead captures.

He told Angler's Mail: "That fish is a juvenile giant snakehead, or channa micropeltes, the meanest of all snakehead species.

"That giant snakehead has no fear. It even attacks human beings when protecting its fry."

The same fish caused chaos when they made it into the U.S. in 2002.
Snipers were set up on river banks to shoot them and entire lakes were poisoned in a bid to wipe them out.

Adult snakeheads can grow to 3ft and weigh as much as 44lb.

when i was in Hawaii during Christmas i was watching the National Geographic channel and there was a program about these northern snakeheads that are threatening northern US lakes. What's unique about them is they can live out of water up to 3 days. They are originally from eastern asia but due to the black market in LA, a Chinese restaurant has imported over 15,000 of these fish. They are a Chinese delicacy and not available in the open market. One man bought one and was going to sacrifice it because his sister was sick and this is a good luck sign according to the Chinese, but his sister got better before he could sacrifice it so he let it go in a local lake called Crater Lake. Weeks later a local fisherman caught one in this lake and didn't know what kind of fish it was so snaped a picture and put it back in and sent the picture to fish and game commission. They didn't know what kind of fish it was so they had to send it to some guy in Florida and he quickly identified it as a snakehead. These fish are extremely dangerous. At Crater lake they quarantined the lake and tried to kill all the fish independently but it was too hard. So they ended up spraying a chemical in the lake to kill all the fish. Since then they have had to repopulate the lake. This was successful at killing all the Snakeheads in the Crater Lake but only due to it being a closed system. Since then they have had Snakeheads appear in a river in Oregon. They are monitoring them currently, but since it is not a closed system they don't have many options. Ohhh ya i forgot to tell you that these fish can also move across land by flapping their fins. Crazy Eyes

Here's a clip of what they do to poor innocent gold fish...

brassmonkey, more like adaptation, which I guess can be classified as evolution.

But look at alligators, they haven't changed at all, because they don't need to. But if things were to evolve, they would evolve anyways, because the monkeys had no real need to evolve (if thats what did happen)

this is just my un-expert opinion

Holy mother! They are in Lake Howell too!!!! I didn't know this was the fish until seeing the cobra head video above! I lived on lake howell over near san pedro, several docks to the left of the summer camp for about 15 years and no joke, every summer for about 4 years this fish would come back. It was so freaking mean that one time it jumped out of the water onto the cypress shoreline to try to attack several of us standing on the shore looking at it. It flopped back into the water.

Every summer my family and I would go out into the lake to clear/pull out hydrilla back when it was really bad in the lake, and that fish attacked my dad once and he was bleeding on his chest... not even like a finger or foot. It chased us out of the water several times too by jumping at us. Extremely aggressive fish but it seemed to stick to about a 40x40ft area and not wonder any further away lucky for us.

This guy reminds me of the coelacanth, minus the fact that this creature is not a deep sea dweller and that it can walk on land. The coelacanth is a "living fossil" with "proto legs" and looks that could kill.

someone once said they'd sick a coelacanth on my ass. ever since then, I've been obsessed.

seriously though, i think that other fish was just born mad. It's got a permanent frown for one thing.
