Posted: Dec 20, 2007 9:05 pm Post subject: Questons about a new board |
|
|
I have been doing all the reading and I have a few more tech questons about boards. first I see where they use foam intead of grip tape for the purpose of not beating the crap out of your body when things go crazy. So my queston does it tear easier and get strange if so how hard is it to regrip with regular grip tape if it starts to go to crap.
Next what board to buy. I know it is better to support grass roots so don't get on me about that but I do know I do not have time to get a cassete from a compny that does not make decks anymore. So what is a good deck? The next thing expensive vs in-expensive, what gives is it worth it to pay for a deck? I can afford it but I am not crazy bout paying for a deck becuase of the "new way to apply the graphic to the deck" I'll go wood grain and bondo to save money as long as it performs.
Lastly Wood vs. Foam core. I have a strong wake boarding background So I am kinda hooked on all the bells and whitles they put in there to make it better but I used to skate alot when I was younger. So I know how important it is to have a snappy deck. Wich one is flat out better functionaly I don't really wanna go W2W I have a wake board for that. I want my skate to well...skate, flip tricks, shuvits, ollying debri, sliding. So light foam and steel rods sound great for Snap and swing weight, But sometimes you just cant beat wood for feeling. So What is best from seasoned riders who have been through a couple decks.
Last back to companies, I feel more safe with LF and Hyper cuz I have been on there wakeboards my whole life. but there seems to be a strong undercurrent that there decks blow and are a money ploy is this true? As a old timer in the bike industry(bike gueek by deffinition) Surely's as a company make me cool and lets everyone know I can fix there whole bike with 1 allen wrench and demand respect but.......... they can not touch big biz like Giant, Specilized, and Cannoneale in flat out bad ass tech that works. Thats what I want in the long run, It would be nice to support grass roots efforts but I am paying for this thing and I want a board that gets me kick flipping with ease and tracking like crazy across the water and getting made pop out of my ollies. Lets face it small companies afford that kind of engineering and RnD.
So Help I have done my research and I need these answers. |

I pulled the foam off of an old Phriction and used a scraper to get the glue off. After that, gripping it was simple. _________________ The promise of heaven out of reach.

So my queston does it tear easier and get strange if so how hard is it to regrip with regular grip tape if it starts to go to crap. | A hair dryer will melt the glue that holds the foam to your skate. Same goes with grip tape. If you buy a skate with foam, just take a hair dryer to it and you should be able to peel off the foam/grip. It's really not that difficult to do.
The foam core versus wood core is totally a decision you're gonna have to make for yourself. You pretty much covered the basics on how they're different, so it's just something that you're gonna have to figure out on your own. As far as the whole HL/LF thing, I think Hyperlite has made a few steps in the right direction with their Byerly and Vinyl shapes, and I hope that they continue doing things like this and not just sit on their hands and hope that they sell a few hundred Catalysts each year and cut their losses. So I think they're sorta moving in the "right" direction. And then you've got LF who has recently been putting all sorts of effort into their wakeskate gear, decks and team. New for 08 is the SST, Reed and Hampson pro models (got them into the shop today... ), and budget-priced Control. LF did have a few years where their stuff was falling apart, but their 07 stuff was solid, and their 08 stuff should hold up well, too. Wakemitch has been riding on a Control for awhile and it's been holding up great.
So Hyperlite makes a well built compression molded skate, and LF's stuff is wood, so if you'd feel best about buying from one of them then yeah, you'll probably find a deck that will work. Will it be the best? Meh...who knows. That's something that you have to think over on your own.
Now you went on to compare the bike industry to the wakeskate industry, and that's all wrong. It's actually the opposite. The biggest companies don't have the biggest OR baddest R&D working on their wakeskates. These big companies are more concerned with the $$ and how much profit they can make (well...for the sake of argument, at least). So they make a deck that 90% of the wakeboarders out there will be stoked to ride at the end of the day when they're done wakeboarding and that's that. And then you have a smaller company like Integrity. I'm sure you've heard that name once or twice given the amount of research that it looks like you've done, and for a damn good reason. He makes decks that work. Period. There's no gimmics or anything...just a bunch of crazy ideas from here and that somehow are incorporated into a skate. Search through Schmaltz's posts and check out the stuff that he's doing if you're interested.
So, again, HL and LF make quality decks. Will you like any of them? I don't know and none of us can answer that one for ya. But also realize that there are smaller grassroots companies out there that have products that will totally kick the "big companies'" asses when it comes to having the best technology in their wakeskates. I could go on (and I know there's stuff that I've missed) but I've got a Sharks game to watch, so I hope this much has helped. _________________ facebook.com/TheLiquidPlayground

my new brand skate is gonna have side walls...and and hour glass shaped center core, a pbt bottom and have pre kick tails...around 7-9 lbs. Does anyone think this will work well in a wakeskate? I thought all of these ideas up on my own. I'm not copying anyone _________________ 10101 |

well, hyperlite tried to put PBT on their wakeskates back in 2002 (PBT is a common material used in wakeboarding) but that wasn't working out for them because they couldn't get it to bond to the wood.
And If you ever have the chance to go riding with canalskater, you will understand what he means when he says that "no board can get you kickflipping, that's up to you." He was shredding on a homemade flat deck (the infamous "POS"). It was eye opening and great to see. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

| I understand that you gotta put in the time that is a no brainer. It is I just don't want something that is going to hold me back and make my life harder. I used to throw doubles, hard flips, varials...blah blah blah. Moral of story I want something that will come around with good pop that will come around |
