definately go with quality if you can afford it... my first engine was a honda knock off from ebay and it workd but gave us problems for a long time until it finally died ... we had it for about a year... i have a suburu on my grinch and it works like a champ... no problems... also check out harbor frieght, they sell quality engines for pretty cheap... _________________ Nothin better than Wakeskating and Motocross!

lake tarpon, I would advise you to go Subaru instead of the Briggs and scrap iron. The throttle systems and the whole engine is so much better. You can pick up a Subaru from Harbor Freight for a pretty good deal.
All in all its just the best bang for the buck vs. a real Honda, and to be honest after building so many different winches with different motors I would still choose the Subaru over even a real honda engine.
Build it once, build it right and have endless fun... _________________ arson-wake.com |

lake tarpon, I'm sure it would work... Personally I would spend the few extra dollars and go with the 9hp.
I've explained this to sooo many people who want to build a winch. Spend a few dollars more and build a winch that will do everything and just not the bare minimum.
But if you are that strapped on cash spend the extra 20-30 dollars and go with the 7hp.
When it comes to building a winch you really need to think about what you actually want it to do, ultimately its not so much about hp as it is torque.
We actually have a few new designs in the works. The 13hp big winch with the mini dragster torque converter setup rips and is super smooth. Almost pulls as good as the Hive, but still not the finesse of the Hive when it comes to the quality of the pull.
I have a "mini hive" in the works right now. _________________ arson-wake.com |

I check this winch out and am trying to model one after it. Where do you get the shivs that the belt goes around? What diameter are they? Has anyone tried the tor-a-verter and how does it compare? Also what is the max rpms that the subaru engine runs at? Any input would be sweet! |

precisionboardingco.com, TAV2 30 works great with a 6.5 briggs, 12-72 sprocket, 8" spool. |

Any videos of this in action? the test run video mentioned in the howto is not working for me.
Also would this work if it is not hitched to the truck? I am looking to build a winch for some beach breaks and I wont be able to get a truck up onto the sand. so it needs to work stand alone. |
