Dogtown gave full credit to Jay Adams for skateboarding. There are a few names that come to mind for wakeskating, maybe it's to early to tell. _________________ dbanana wrote:

I think the "Dogtown" movie and documentary for that matter skipped over alot of dudes from that area that weren't involved with Jeff Ho/Zephyr. Guys that were really good too like, Arthur Lake, Jimmy Plummer, Tom Inoyue, Dennis ''Polar Bear" Agnew, and few others. _________________

now I may be looking through a dirty eye but I gotta give it to TH. He put the wood, shoes, and grip into the water and that's the way I do it so I thank him. |

Two groups of really early experimenters I can think of are Jason Messer/Stan Pleskunas and Erich Schmaltz/Josh Smith.
Both of them have been wakeskating since before I was born. _________________ √ |

MECHANICAL PULL, so... Before black people in basket ball, it was a punch of panzy white boys with their pants up as high as girls wear sofies. Then it turned into what we see today ......

in my opinion, jason is actually way under appreciated, and it breaks my heart that in today's wakeskating media (when we talk about history and who gave what) that his name is rarely, if ever mentioned.
Thomas took everything to another level and I don't think there's anyone else who could have done that like him, and it's hard to imagine where wakeskating would be right now without his influence and enthusiasm. but jason knew how to ride a wakeskate right from the start, with no other examples to follow. when you look at the wakeboarders that would wakeskate, it was a lot of wake to wake 180s and hanging tens...just stuff that wasn't super impressive (and unstylish). but j had that heavy skate influence right from the start, pretty much learning shuvs every which way (including a landed, albeit undocumented, wake to wake ungrabbed shuv), and his wake to wakes on that old josh smith where he rolls his foot forward and then kicks to level it off--if you've seen it, you know what I mean. Anyway, he was way ahead of his time.
technologically speaking, thomas has given a great deal to wakeskating (almost every board utilizes some unique concept that cassette helped pioneer, whether it be the 4-trac thing or whatever). and not to mention the fact that his riding is what really helped people take notice. He's got a great mind and a great talent for wakeskating.
obviously, there are more people, but these two stand out in my mind. These two guys truly committed to wakeskating when the felt it--j never ever depended on a pay check from wakeboarding while he tried to wakeskate and get FWT rolling (basically when there wasn't any "wakeskating" industry and nobody even understood what he was doing), and once wakeskating was thomas' true thing, he left a promising career in wakeboarding to pursue what he loved. And I've heard from more than one person that he (thomas) did it just because it was right for him, and not because there was some grand scheme or master plan. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

nick taylor invented wakeskating, that's why he's so good. speaking of tnt, anyone notice he's been so serious on these boards lately, c'mon nick stop dropping all these names like Stan P-word whatever it is, no one is impressed with your nonsense. keep in mind it's just tap dancing on griptape with wood underthat, and water under that, and sand or rocks or some other type of surface under that. hey you know i'm just jokin wit cha mang. _________________

Hey! Communism! Ahh! FANTA!!! Hippies and liberals
People keep telling me that I'm all serious on here now, but it's sort of something that goes back and forth. If I'm in a funny mood, I can make a joke out of every thread, but I also like letting people in on all the stuff I've learned about wakeskating over the last few years. 99% of that thanks to wakeskating.com
but anyways, my cinnamon toast is getting cold, so I'm gonna have to tend to those matters now,

I think Byerly was the first pro to have shots in the magazine and in videos wakeskating. |

there's actually a euro who had wakeskating shots in a mag before scott. eventually we'll do a little write up on it for the site, because the whole concept is pretty darn cool. scott landed a 3 shuv on a flight 69...and he didn't have the first wakeskating video coverage either. I think erich schmaltz has that honor. FLF used a shot of him trying a wake to wake kickflip with his stan pleskunas "nerf board" ( as I think he called it) and his booties back when they filmed "hit it". it is, as his profile states, "the miracle trick." _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |
