woah, woah woah, I didnt say I was going to have under 200 I said I was hoping, under 200 is my target range, where I live there are a lot of scrap yards that sell the metal for the frame for pennies on the dollar, so long as you can find it, the only big ticket things I need are the hub/sprocket, axle and clutch. I can get the clutch and chain for $40 on ebay, and the axle for $40 as well, the hub and sprocket are like 26 on northern tool. And I got a buddy that might eb able to hook me up w/ a good price on rope and if not, im gonna get 1000' for $46 from qcsupply.com , if you guys do the math, it is feasible.
**edit, that leaves me around $45 for frame and spool materials, when I finish it, i'll put up a tally and see how much, if at all, I went over $200** _________________ Back from the dead |

theres alot to it you dont even realize until you are building... id say the best you could accomplish is 300-400...
you have to add in hardware... antirust paint... engine mount... tensioner... etc
the little shizzle adds up... i mean i spent 20 bucks just on a 3/4 inch drill bit from home depot _________________ Nothin better than Wakeskating and Motocross!

tensioner? no need for one, just make slits in the mounting plate instead of holes so you can slide the whole engine. W have dirtbikes (the race high maintenance ones) so we have hardware everywhere, paint ill need, im just gonna go grey primer, I Think I can do it for under 200, but we'll see. _________________ Back from the dead |

Someone needs to invent the tree winch... something you can throw on a tree for anchor and such. Crazy, crazy shizzle. _________________ -Jim |

depending on what you have already and what youre capable of, a 200 dollar winch would be difficult, and even more so if you have to buy everything (even if you get everything used, with a free motor). heres a break down of what my winch is going to cost me, prices are from northerntool.com and dont include tax or shipping. im fairly certain that im going to be able to do mine for very close to $200-$250.
motor = free
metal = already have it
hardware = already have it
clutch = 60
axle = already have it or 40 bucks (not sure if my original idea will work or not)
hub = easily make one
bearings for axle (pillow blocks) = 15 bucks
rope = 50 bucks
chain = already have it
sprocket = 13 bucks
throttle = 15-30 bucks
fairlead = find a cheap used one or make one
metal fabrication/welding = what i do for a living
paint = already have it
so right now, if i have to buy the axle and spend 30 bucks on the throttle, i am at 208. im pretty sure ive accounted for everything, but we all know how custom projects like this goes... |

you can get your clutct $20 cheaper on ebay, I dont know why you need to buy a throttle, everything seems to be correct, but like I said, we'll see. _________________ Back from the dead |

LAXitives288, without a throttle, how do you plan on making the clutch engage? i guess you could do it by hand on the carb, but itd be much easier to twist a hand throttle. plus, depending on your motor and set up, you could use it for speed control as well.
clutch was only 10 dollars cheaper on ebay. IMO it'll be less hassle just to get everything at once from one place (northerntool.com). thanks for the heads up though. |

yea, the way im gonna have things set up im just gonna extend the throttle off of the carb a little bit, what size engine do you have, b/c im gonna be running a 5 horse honda so the cranks could be different diameters, but yeah, mines pretty much gonna be bare bones ghetto rigged. _________________ Back from the dead |

You all can argue all you want about how much its going to cost but Ben Horan ,who rides for the oak team, built a winch for like $250 he found scrapmetal and welded that for the frame then he got a busted engine that he fixed and all the stuff for around 250 the only thing he dosent have is a torque converter so it dosent do deep water starts only sitting and bomb dropps. but one of those will only cost you about 100-150 so i say Laxitives288 go for it _________________ RIDE SoFaR... |
