|
|
I guess we will soon find out if a 6HP engine will do the trick. Gearing is a huge issue though so hopefully we can get it straight with tha gears if we run into trouble. We are trying to come up with some ideas for a strong spool and the best one so far is a hollow conversion sleeve for a standard weight lifting bar (coincidentally 1" in diameter) with a 5 pound plate welded to each end. It will be strong as hell. Does anyone think 10lbs added to this beastly drive will be too heavy? also, is the diameter of the center of the spool too small? (one again, i guess it can be geared to work but i wonder which will make for better torque? smaller or larger center? ) if i were an engineer, this shizzle would be a lot easier...
GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS...positive or negative, it will be helpful__/\___/\___ |

Here's a positive thought:
Craftsman tools were a very good choice |

| MT, IMO that is WAY more heavy duty than necessary. This rope, even 1000 feet, weights a few pounds, not too much. I plan on using something like .083" wall sheet maybe .120", but basically all the "ends" have to do is stay straight and the rope is mostly guided onto the spool by the rope guide/fairlead. So your inner diameter is 1"? That will make for needing "less" gearing as far as torque goes but you are gonna vary a lot in the rpm range since the spool diameter will increase quickly from 1". I am shooting for 4.5" or so for the base diameter and with 1000' of rope on there it should be like 7" tops all the way wrapped up. |

im not going to comment one the gear issue, its out of my power cause i suck at math, but with the extra 10lbs on there is where my comment comes in, yes it will be strong enough, but you will def have to build a brake if you didnt already plan on it, 10lbs+4 or so lbs of rope= not cool for the winch operator to be safe, that thing is going to be spinning so fast that you would want it to stop quick _________________ florida+waves=gay

| yeah, but the shaft dosn't spin as free as you think. when the chain is tight, it is even a beach to pull rope out sometimes. should be pretty intersting what happens, none the less. |

yeah it will be fun to see what happens, even though it is hard to pull the rope out, it still is alot of weight to be moving that fast uncontrolled, but as far as the brake goes, its all up to youMTwakeRaiderz, good luck and happy building _________________ florida+waves=gay

This is a verypopular topic so what about an all winch forum with topics like:
frame
spool/drum
engine
clutch/sprocket/pulleys
rope
etc
I wanna make it on my site (http://www.wakeskating.nl). The site is in Dutch but the winch forum will of course be in English.
What about it & any tips/suggestions??? |

| Hey mtwakeriderz Does ur engine have an internal clutch. Or what is the extra control for? I see the control for throttle. But what does the other slide control do. |

|
|
Today was our most progressive day by far. We made it out to Clark Iron and Steel to get supplies. We Measured and made all the required cuts so we're ready to head to our welder tommorow to complete the frame. We scrapped the heavy ass spool idea in exchange for our new plan. $3 bought our galvanized tube and two old 11.5 in. saw blades with perfect 1" centers. We're planning on grinding the teeth off and putting a rubber edge around the outsides. (or we might just keep the blades to shredd shizzle!) prob not though...but seriously, if the grinding and welding goes straight, this is an easy street to a pimp spool. Can't wait to Winch.......
***FEEL FREE TO DROP ANY KNOWLEDGE TONIGHT THAT MIGHT SAVE US FROM A MAJOR DISASTER WHEN WE WELD EVERYTHING INTO PLACE TOMMOROW..thnx... |

| looks like its coming along, i think someone else on here also used the saw blade idea, good deal. I kinda like the boxed frame as opposed to the kind of tradition flat base and slanted lead bar everyone is using if that makes sense. I think the standard kinda deal works great and looks great but i cant figure out anywhere to stylishly put the throttle and hand brake controls lol |

frame looks a lot like mine, finally another frame with only 90 degree angles, i like minimalism!!
good luck tommorow.
nice idea with the spool. i used steel sewage pipe with an diameter of 11cm.
anyone experience with internal clutches and reductions?
this engine 6.5hp has a reduction of 1:2 and a clutch, new price 283,-- usd

martijn the more i look at your design the more i like it, looks really clean i might play around with my setup some more now. How long have you been running it and what kinda rope are you using?
IMO the internal clutch/gear reduction thing is nice, but for $283 you could get a standard 6.5hp engine and then buy a comet torq-a-verter for it, and thus has an infinite gear ratio setup. i plan to do that later on depending on how the centrifugal clutch works out. |

| martijn, thanks for the props. yeah we definitely based our frame design off of yours. It looks really good. I assume you used Stainless. I don't think our welds will be quite as clean as yours but we hope for the best! NICE WORK... |

Norcal:
what is a comet torq-a-verter??? something like a vario clutch?
i used a clutch a 8hp compacter, it's working allright (for only 35 euros).
i suppose everybody is using kart clutches.
like i said, the rope has been used the whole season 2005.
for my winch bought 300mtr (about 1000ft) dyneema with red nylon cover for only 75 euro/90 usd. it breaks at 350 kg 770 lbs. i used the whole season (also with wakeboarders doing tantrums) and it did not break
MT:
i had pros doin the welding. its not stainless steel, if there's a next time i will have it done in stainless and spend a day polishing it to make blink _________________ http://www.wakeskating.nl/fullpull.html

martijn- I almost bought a bar of stainless because it only added a little extra cost, but the guy told me it would weight a little more. I guess in the end though, a couple extra pounds on 100+ isn't noticible.
Is everyone just using a 12T Centrifugal Clutche with a #35 Chain or is a Max-Torque Track Tunable Clutch a better route? |

i dont know, like i said, im using a clutch of a 8hp compacter, no chain and sprocket but a belt and a pulley, it weighs tons so a wanna go for a kart clutch
Does anybody know if you can use an regular kart clutch?? _________________ http://www.wakeskating.nl/fullpull.html
