Creator of skateboarding move suing for $20 million
MIAMI — The creator of an aerial skateboarding move known as ollie is suing several companies, including Disney and Sega, over the use of the word.
Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, 42, says the companies infringed on trademarking rights. He is seeking more than $20 million in damages.
"I'm just a skateboarder," Gelfand said. "I'm not a huge, mega corporation . . . yet."
Gelfand's lawsuit was sent back to Broward Circuit Court from federal court last month.
Sega Corp. sells a skateboarding arcade game called Ollie King for $9,779.99. Then there's Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure video game.
Telephone message left Thursday for Disney and game publisher Activision were not immediately returned.
Sega's Chicago lawyer, Gerald O. Sweeney Jr., said in an e-mail to The Miami Herald, "Sega is confident that Mr. Gelfand does not have a valid legal basis for suing Sega."
Retailer Ron Jon Surf Shop is named in the lawsuit, but company officials say they stopped selling Ollieboards after a cease-and-desist letter from Gelfand's lawyer.
Gelfand invented the skateboarding trick in 1976, which soon became a regular stunt with skateboarders.
Scott Schlesinger, one of Gelfand's Fort Lauderdale attorneys, says "ollie" belongs to Ollie, much as "Madonna" belongs to Madonna.
"You can't use someone's name without paying him," Schlesinger said. "This is the guy's identity. This is who he is."
Most young skateboarders today have no idea who Gelfand is, says Mark Whiteley, editor in chief of SLAP magazine, a skateboarding publication based in San Francisco.
"The only people who really remember are people who were around then or people who are interested in skateboarding history," he says. "I don't know if anyone under the age of 25 knows it came from a person."

Sorry for the double post, but...
Are we going to have to pay a quarter everytime we say the word now?
If this goes through it looks like we'll have to change the word "ollie" to something different in order to avoid paying royalties for the use of the word. |

Yea but putting a lawsuit against is just as lame. Besides, they're using the flat ollie, invented by Mullen, not Alan's bowl ollie. . . . .a bowlie. He's a dirty douche. _________________ I like to choke when my team needs me the most, no Romo. |

freerider4, Aright he's a 9th ward dirtbag. Trust me, if you live near a ghetto (especially go to school right in the middle of one) it's hard not to be racist. You know those same people who are saying "The gov. isn't taking care of us cuz we're black"? Those are who I'm talking about. They think that EVERYONE is racist, when it seems to me that they're racist against thereselves, as well as white people. _________________ I like to choke when my team needs me the most, no Romo. |

freerider4, If everyone in those projects are cool or nice, then these projects are WAAAAAAY different. Ever been to the French Quarter? See how bad most of the people are there (not just during Mardi Gras)? The 9th ward is AT LEAST ten times worse.
I don't hate black people, just 9th ward trash of any race, just so happens it's predominatel black (no pun intended). Did you hear of people shooting at the helicopters trying to rescue them (after Katrina)? They were from the ninth ward. Remember that picture constantly being shown on the news of that black guy carrying a t.v.? He was from the ninth ward. Did you hear about the raping in the Superdome? Most of them were from the 9th ward. Ethnicity aside, most people from the 9th ward are lower than animals, no moral value whatsoever.
Liquid could probably atest to how bad the 9th ward is too. |

integrity640, Yea, it's full of bums and just straight up crazy people. My friend even made a short Bumfights kind of video, he just gave em a 40 and they did pretty much anthing he asked them to. And yea, the beignets are great, from Cafe du Monde they're the best. I always get like three after skating all day around the quarter. _________________ I like to choke when my team needs me the most, no Romo. |

| jboss they always talked about those shooting but I never saw video or interviews so now I am a little skeptical. althoug I do agree the people were partly to blame for that. i'll let you comment back and then i'll stop so this thread can get back on track. |

freerider4, i did, it was all over the news. I personally think its due to media, showing rap videos with guns and girls, and drugs. Thats just what i think, plus the black community could use a good leader like Martin Luther King. Al shapton and jesse jackson are dumbfvcks.
jboss, omg youre makin me sooo damn hungry for those right now
and this skateboard guy is retarded. thats kinda like saying hey, i invented the word "the", you cant use it _________________ They call me Dr. Jones
