I too recommed everyone try everything they can - grip, foam, fins, etc.
That said, I perfer foam and I have tried both. To me, grip tape was too grippy during use and I got tired of it shredding everything in site - my hand, my leg, everyone in the boat, etc.
Plus, foam offers me a nice option - riding barefoot from time to time. I like to take a barefoot run ever week or two, just for the feel. No jumps, no tricks, just carving.

I have seen people go barefoot on grip . . . every time there is blood in the boat. Going to kill me? no - but a needless pain - yes.
Secondly, my real passion is running, so my feet are really important to me.

when I was 12 like you, I also did not care . . . I used to love blood, scars, etc when I skateboarded. Just wait until you past 30 or 40 - you will get pains you did not even know existed.
Anyhow - I think too much is being made of this. I would be happy to skate tape or foam - I have both now. My point was that I prefer foam for a number of reasons.
