ben ray, Yeah I used to be on the Wakeboard Team. I won the advanced division at the '98 Cold Water Classic and then got hooked up with a sponsorship from Innerlight. Stayed on the team long enough to win Outlaw in the first stop of the Panhandle Wakeboard Series back in '99, then made the trek to Auburn to go to college. After that didn't get to ride as much and finished dead last in outlaw at the next comp. I guess you'd say Innerlight and myself broke up by lack of communication from a long distance relationship, they never called me so I quit contacting them. Back then it was a Flavor of the Month type deal, one minute I was it then some other kid would come around and all the attention went to them. I guess I got pissed because I watched them get guys who weren't as good as me with the straps get put on regional sponsorships with the big companies, while I was left out. But hey I was 17 years old and thought my sh*t didn't stink. Overall it was fun because I got to ride with guys who would push me to do more stuff and it made me a better rider, nothing against them because that shop is legendary, I just went a different route. _________________ "If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? Pirate for me the different route was going to college 4 hours away from where my shop sponsorship was. I have to say that college definitley change my wakeboarding. I still strap in from time to time because let's face, girls love the flips, absolutely love it. But I enjoy wakeskating more these days, I still get excited when I pop a backside shuv higher than the last one and when I actually get a chance in some glassy water. I just know how some of these local shop sponsorships can turn out, most are great things and get kids some exposure but they have to remember that more times than not, you are looking out for yourself. _________________ "If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? Nice work ben ray! I love how these unknowns end up ripping (w. another example being nekkie and that no grab wake to wake shove..or whoever that was). Anyway, I can hardly wait to see the footage...
cbsmith, I know where you're coming from, riding wise. I still have the desire to wakeboard now and again..it reminds me of snowboarding and I still like the way a backside 180 feels. However, I enjoy wakeskating a lot more, and it's funny because with wakeskating, I'm fully willing to get up early and ride at 10 am for an hour and once again in the afternoon (if we're at our cabin). I'd never do that with wakeboarding...the water would have to be calm, I didn't want to ride early, blah blah blah....it's an interesting and welcome change in my attitude. It makes me happy... _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

Auburn is a great school, they have a pretty dedicated wakeboard club up there right now, but wakeskating hasn't made it's way up to east central alabama. I've visited just about every SEC school and I will argue that Auburn has the best looking women by a longshot, a National Championship in Football to boot! _________________ "If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? | cdsmith999, Do you know Joe Pharez? We were roommates in college and he used to ride for Innerlite back then. We used to wakeboard with alot of people on the UWF wakeboard club. But all I do now is wakeskate. |

Yeah I met Joe a few times. He rode with Chris Skinner some didn't he? Did you know a guy from the Daphne/Fairhope area named Cale? I rode with him a few times on Lake Martin. Did Nick Weinacker have any connection to Joe, I remember he was at a few of the Innerlight tourney's. Do you know Dave McDuff? _________________ "If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong, though. | cbsmith999, Me, Joe, and Cale all went Fairhope and rode on Fish River. Nick went to McGill in Mobile and rode with Joe a few times back in high school. The Weinackers and Bonifays were family friends. Thats kinda how he got hooked up not to mention he is a good rider. Dave is cool as hell. He still lives in p-cola and has come over to Fairhope a few times this summer to ride with me and Joe. I am living in Tuscaloosa right now but am about to move to Atlanta to start working. Joe just moved to Montgomery to start physical therapy school. What a small world. |

Damn small world. Last time I saw Cale he was into kayaking, not sure what happened with all that. Dave was by far the smoothest person I ever saw ride a wakeboard, he didn't get near the credit he deserved back then. Tell him Blake Smith said hey. Have all you guys made the crossover to wakeskating like me because, I basically stink it up on a wakeboard now? _________________ "If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? Kavanagh, I haven't got it from the VCR to my camera. There is no port for a firewire on my VCR. I know what I need _________________ √ |

cbsmith999, I'm sorry man, Auburn didn't win the national title this year, I am the first to admit that USC won it outright, and I'm a Sooner. Auburn had a heck of a team this year, and a heck of a season, but playing V-Tech and claiming a national title when USC dominated Oklahoma (although we choked, we are a much better team than V-tech) isn't right. But I guess if I were in your shoes, I'd probably be saying the same stuff. GL next year though, (I'm starting to get pumped for next season and we still have 3 months to go ) |
