In our final Remote mini-interview, Silas Thurman sheds some light on his pro model, and the heart behind Remote wakeskates.
Describe the design features on your pro model wakeskate. (The concave, kicktails, edge/rail profile, etc.)
Silas: Ben, Andrew, and myself took a combination of what we've learned in the past and molded the best of each of our previous ideas into one board. The concave we chose is steep on the mid section and the nose and tails. This feels great under your feet plus adds the weight we were looking for. The rails are a subtle variable edge, a bit soft in the middle for forgiveness, and turning sharper toward the ends.
My board specifically was chosen really on my foot size and height. I'm 5'7 and wear an 8.5 shoe so the 40.5 feels perfect for length and width due to my stance. I can ride Ben's board, but at my height I feel that the 40.5 fits better, and Andrew's board feels a little small, being that I weigh probably 20 pounds more than Andrew...The 40.5 feels like the perfect fit for me personally.
What performance features were you trying to achieve while designing your pro model?
Silas: I really try and find the smallest board I can ride that doesn't drag, has good concave, good pop, and a good weight.
There's been some talk about Remote's rocker line. What makes it different from other wakeskates out there, and what do you like about it?
Silas: Our rocker line is amazing; [there's] tons of pop, but it's fast so you don't feel the drag that you get out of boards that have a really aggresive three stage. Four years ago I was riding a 42 and it felt great, because of our new rocker line I'm able to ride a 40.5 and it feels faster than the 42 used to. This is nice because I can ride a smaller board, which feels awesome on rails and flat water, but still moves really effortlessly through the water. It's seriously the best rocker line I've ever ridden.
The Remote team is recognized for their abilities on rails and natural terrain as much as anything else. What did you guys do to ensure the boards would withstand your level of riding and the abuse your boards go through?
Silas: Ya, the team is always hitting rails, and Ben and Andrew are charging pretty big drops. We had to design a board that could withstand that kind of abuse. We also demanded that the boards be made out of wood. Each board is carefully hand made in the USA by people who understand that kind of abuse. I'm excited to say that from day one of testing no one is yet to break a board...
How are the Remotes produced?
Silas: I don't want to give away all our secrets, but the materials we use hold up, and the way we lay up our wood keeps the boards from twisting and losing their rocker line. They were built to last.
For someone who's looking to buy a new wakeskate, what would you want them to know about the Remote line?
Silas: Remote is run by its team, from design, graphics, marketing, fielding emails, phone calls, and most importantly riding. We don't punch in and we never punch out, we work 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. This is not our job, it's our life and you can see that in every one of our products and in everything we do as Remote.
Finally, what's the story behind your graphic concept?
Silas: Not a real big story. Ben, Andrew, and myself sketch some stuff we like and run with it. I think we have more of an earthy feel and you'll see that in all our graphics to come. We don't like the status quo of running one graphic all year so we decided that we will have two to three graphic changes a year with new design features here and there. We will do smaller runs on each series of graphics so we always keep it exciting and fresh.
