I was doing some fiberglass hull repairs to the boat yesterday when it hit me.Why not take your typical wood wakeskate and throw a couple wraps of glass around them.Sorta like a surfboard, but with wood instead of foam and only a couple wraps of glass since the wood is so much stronger than the foam.
I don't see it adding to much weight, since the cloth weighs nothing and you really don't need that much resin.
The board would be literally indestructable with delam's a thing of the past.If you wanted to get even stronger you could go Kevlar.
The only thing I'm wondering is will you lose that wood feel. The board will definatly be a lot stiffer.
If I get the time one of these days I'm going to have to try it on an old wakeskate.
Anyone seen or heard of anyone doing this before? It's so simple I can't believe I never thought of it before.

My brother-in-law made a wood skate with fibreglass wrap (3 layers i think) and it was very heavy. And it also seemed to make the board less buoyant and very difficult to ride/turn. One layer may be okay, but he hasn't tried that yet.

If you were actually making the boards you could go a lot lighter on the wood because of all the strength of the glass.

tribal, ive been thinking about doing that. ive been wondering how it would hold up on rails. marine epoxy on one of my decks just started tearing off after a rail session one day but maybe the extra cloth will help it out. ill get around to it someday.

Integrity uses a 22oz triaxial woven glass down the center of the board to stiffen it up and keep its life.

I also think this could work... Maybe make a 3-4 ply skate and then wrap it in something. I was thinking kevlar too Smile Or even carbon... Carbon cloth is not THAT expensive. I mean I used to do RC Helis and ordered sheets of carbon to make parts. And it wasn't that expensive. I bet that for much less than $100 you'll get all the carbon cloth you'll need Razz But then carbon may suck for the feel/rigidity or whatever... It needs to absorb the vibrations like wood does.

Anyway, how hard/expensive is it to make a 3-4 plys skate that has the same shape as a skateboard, just bigger... ? What do you need?

I checked the make your own wakeskate thread but that's not what I want to do... In that thread he just adds sanded down pieces of wood on a flat deck to make the concave.

in short: how do you make a wakeskate scaled skateboard? Birthday

Nekkie, i would make a temporary jig. because the skate will lose pop, i would put a 4x4 under the tails and maybe a 2x4 under the sides. weight the top and you should have concave and pop when it dries.

Mr. Top Hat, what I wan to do is a replacement for my broken bi decks lol...

So I was thinking make a top and lower deck just like the original bi levels but with much less ply and then wrap 'em in something to make them stiffer, since there are less ply, and much more durable.

would work?

i did it on my homemade skate. it weighed a lot, but rode fine. i stead of using cloth just use the resin. no need to finish, and it seals like 100 times better than any finish.

Ive done it its good until it gets damaged throught the galss once the wood gets wet it actually rots faster, b.c the core cant dry out fast enough so thats something to think about , but not a bad idea
