i had and interesting idea...

Has anyone ever used bondo before? In particular 'lightweight marine' bondo?

....do you get where im going with this?

I could use this lightweight marine bondo to add a concave sape to the board that i am making...add rigidness...the board wont loose its rocker...and waterproof seal it all in one step.

but i dont know anything about this material...so thats why i am asking. suggestions?

freerider4, that's exactly what I was going to say! I've personally never used it, but wBm did this thing on "customized" gear, and they had one thing with hunter brown using bondo to make some molded in fins (it was the beginning of the craze, yo). One thing I remember is that they had to gently sand the surface where the bondo was going to be applied so it had something to stick to.

Anyway, you'd probably need a shizzle load of bondo, but post something if you do it!

i am worried about two things in particular...

1. weight

2. with it crack when it flexes or smacks up against another had surface.

my guess is if it is solid enough to make moulded fins...its solid enough to take some abuse.

I have used bondo alot working on old cars and motorcycles, and it is tricky. If bondo is mixed with two much hardener it is brittle, not enough it is soft. As far as cars go you never want build it up thick , the least amount of bondo the better. Even still it will crack up. Good bondo is made to have some flex to it.
I would suggest building up your surface with bondo( don't just sand the surface your building on, gouge it with a screwdriver if your bondo is gonna be thicker than a 1/4 inch.) Then coat it with fiberglass.

Why would you suggest gouging over sanding? What are the benefits?

Whenever you use bondo on doors, hoods or trunks it has a better chance to crack up and break off , you want it to bondo to your surface well you need to make ruff than sanding will do. Wakeskates go through alot of abuse and your bonding to wood as opposed to metal...so take advantage of its softness by gouging it or drilling holes in it.
