Get a cad drawing of your spool.
Contact a laser cutting company
http://www.dblasermetals.com/
These guys have reasonable prices. There in Creemore.
Then buy the keystock, sprocket and brake set-up.
I'll take 5% in stock.
Just kidding

Guy, I can make the spools myself, i just would perfer to buy prebuilt spools. Our local metal supplier did the cutting for me on my last spool, all i had to do was drill out the sidewalls and asemble. thanks for the link, will keep them in mind if i need any lazer cutting.

supermanotorious, I tried making a spoolout of oak already, it worked great. i would rather have metal sidewalls, metal holds up a little better and is easier to make releasing spools. heres a pic of the first winch i made with a wood spool.

awesome, thanks for sharing, i know steel would hold up better but the wood is crazy light weight and easy to work with, as far as releasing spool it all boils down to your hub so why do you think metal would be better than wood for that particular point? i dont think the walls matter

the release pin has to go thru the wood into the shaft...so if the winch gets under a stress it will break the wood were the pin runs thru it.....so metal is way beter if you are doin a release...

supermanotorious, The spool has alot of stress on it and the wood sidewalls start to flex and crack> i used 3/4" wood side walls and the first atempt worked for a few weeks until the steel rods that hold the spool together started to bend and warp the spool. You can totaly use wood just make sure you sleeve your threaded rod with heay wall tubing so it cant flex or bend. I just perfer metal because it eliminates any warping or flexing of the spool.

I'm really not following, I would use a steel hub to connect these spool walls to the axle, the pin goes thru the hub, not the spool walls

Like S.A said use metal or aluminum wood will break once swelled from the water, water decays wood..here at sprocket America we can get u a full spool crafted from aircraft aluminum and cut with a water jet. Hub bolts sidewalls will all be non corrosive!!! They work excellent and believe me its the best way, spool is so strong that it can break the realising pin if handle is sucked up into the winch. I have gone thru many prototypes in the making of this, also water jet can cut virtually any design into the spool. Let me know if u are interested!!

The wood is a great idea! but you almost need a sidewall to be 1" thick compared to metal or alumnium that is only 1/8" thick. I understand you will be using a metal hub for the realising part of it. But if you decide to use wood, just makesure you reinforce were the bolts and rods go through the middle! I cant not stress this enough! after a few winch sessions with our wood spool i could see the wood cracking at the hub. i even thought of putting a layer of fiberglas on it! i tried 1/2" wood sidewalls and 3/4" and they both cracked and split. Good luck and let me know how it turns out! and if you need some help give me a shout!
