I'm thinking about getting rid of mine. If people want to stay in touch, there is a million other ways without having to share ALL of my information to advertisers. Ya know, like phones and stuff....

Agreed. I have a cell phone on me 99% of the time. If you don't have my number, either you never had it or didn't think it was worth keeping. Both scenarios equals Toxis not giving a damn. lol

Toxis, EXACTLY how I feel, except for the times I REALLY need to get in touch with someone who I haven't heard from in a while. It's been rare, but it's happened, haha.

facebook seemed like a good idea until I actually read that article. i don't have a facebook account either. I never liked the idea of having my information on the internet. What's worse is that people make money off of your information and you don't really have any control over it.

I'm assuming personal data such as photos, information about you or your family and friends, etc. What makes me want to delete my account are all of the douchebags who post their entire day's worth of happenings in their statuses. Then again, I don't have to read it, but no one really cares that you are playing Xbox while jerking it to a Lady Gaga song.

As long as you're cognizant of Facebook's intentions then it isn't much of an issue. You just have to know that they're here to provide a service...and in exchange they're trying to make money off of the information that you provide them when you fill out your profile and each time you 'like' stuff. That's all stuff that you can easily refrain from doing. Then you just have to remember to check the privacy settings occasionally to make sure Facebook hasn't "improved" them (read: take them away).

Hide them. You can hide Mafia Wars and FarmVille and all that stuff, too.

Those dont exist. Laughing

But in addition to the ads they have on their site, Facebook has a very large amount of data that they could sell to anyone looking to get info on a certain demographic. Not sure if they're doing this, though.

this is definitely worth a read- http://gizmodo.com/5534736/more-reasons-you-should-still-quit-facebook

yookyle, It's not just for their site. They're selling information to other companies.

It really is just about being smart with your info. Just don't put stuff out there that you wouldn't want people to know.

With that said, tracking down info on ANYONE has always been readily available through phone books, public records, etc. Stuff like Facebook just makes it easier to find this information out since it's all in one place (if you choose to put it there).

(sigh) there are already companies that have our personal information and have us placed in a demographic. there's a really good movie on the PBS website called the persuaders. It's about marketing, but it talks about these super databases with our information that's for sale.
