So me and a buddy are going to build a winch in shop class.
So i have some questions about what i need.
What size of engine do i need?
Thoughts on torque converter vs. centrifugal clutch?
what is everything i need?
and how do i make a releasable spool?
any answers would be great, or even links to tutorials.
thanks

2nd that, but ill give some tips i suppose
mine is a 9hp with a CC, you can also have like a 6.5 with a tourqe converter. but good luck finding a tav as the company is dunzo. I would recomend getting all the ingredients and making a wooden frame out of 2x2's because that wasy you can make the most compact and smartest frame design. and remember the gear ratio is important along with the spool diameter. i learned mine all thru this website so look around. also releasable spools are confusing, there is a good thread somewhere here i remember but its not needed

6.5 hp
you can use a cc and still deepwater start if you are light
if you use a cc you dont need a releasable spool

engine
chain
frame
clutch or tav
sprocket gear ma bob
hub
axle
pillow blocks
and a spool
+rope

I just got my new TAV from Bulletlines, very similar to Comet and they are still on discount, to address your 9 hp question, I would just tell you that I'm using a Comet TAV 1" bore 8 hp max rating on an 11 hp engine and I've had no problems with it, I would bet mainlyu because we winch in short bursts, not like go-kart drivers

it looks and feels a little cheaper than a Comet TAV but I'll save an opinion for when it's in use, I'll post some pics later tonight
