well the outside housing (what the chain is on) is free spinning and the inside is like 5 or so spring loaded pads. at idle the pads stay tight to the shaft, once you start upping the RMPs the centrifugal force pushes the pads outward until they meet the inside of the outer housing causing the chain to start spinning.
got it? _________________ HOTDOGS! |

| TAV offers a smoother pull where a centrifugal just kind of 'kicks in'. It puts less strain on the engine too if you're pulling heavy people. |

| I find my CC works well for the money 30 bucks or something. Never tried a TAV. |

miller, a tav is the only way to go for a winch, its the only thing that is gonna deep water start you, it will increase the distance you can start from the winch and get you up to speed quickly. _________________ HOTDOGS! |

PoopSkater is right though. It's definitely doable/cheaper to use a centrifugal. Depending on your weight and engine HP though it can cause extra strain on the engine and/or your arms. |

Ive only ridden once on a winch with a CC, I got, maybe 4 pulls in. The way I see it, I used to have a gokart with a CC and it was always burning out. When I heard there was a device that would up your torque I was sold. I have a TAV on my winch and its the bees knees... _________________ - Mead-Hall |

yeah, back in the day gokarting around my yard i burned up a CC, it broke apart and one of the pads flew out and hit me in the back of the head thats how I found out how they worked.
CCs create too much heat because of how much they slip on the outer housing and are really inefficient, but hey if you're looking for a cheap fix.... _________________ HOTDOGS! |

| With anything, if you invest in good parts now, you'll be set for a long time and not have to spend even more time/money fixing your shortcuts. |

i always wonder what kind of transmission they have on those utv golf cart type things. i keep poking around for a dead one on craigslist so i can take the transmission out and mess around with it... i know its some kind of continuously variable transmission (which is kind of what the TAV2 is) but it looks like its in a big metal case.... _________________
