article excerpt: Maybe after the Clinton and Bush years, we forgot how to give a president a chance to serve not just as a punching bag but also as a role model.

Have we become so disenchanted and polarized we can't give our own president a chance to teach our children something about what it takes to succeed?
...

Clearly, his agenda is to inspire kids to make the most of education in building a better life, not to brainwash a generation to do his bidding. Pointing to his own experiences, as well as those of others from diverse and modest origins, his remarks convey the importance of personal responsibility, perseverance and education in fulfilling one's potential while contributing to our nation's future.

The only way to argue with that is by confusing the issues, twisting the situation into something it was never intended to be. It's gotten so bad, some folks don't want their kids exposed to the president because they're afraid he'll teach them socialism. My answer is that even if he did plan to discuss socialism, they should let their child listen. Of course, the president wouldn't do that, but why is that my answer?

Because, as another role model -- President Reagan -- once said: "All great change in America begins at the dinner table.

In that light, the president's speech isn't a threat but an opportunity for families to engage their children on the issues. If parents disagree with the president's views, they can sit down at the dinner table with their kids and explain their divergence. They may even find, when it comes to the value of education, President Obama might say something worth hearing. In the process, parents will teach their children:

• That we should listen respectfully to others. Doing so, we might realize that we can appreciate certain aspects of a person while disagreeing with others, and that partial differences of opinion needn't always spur absolute rejection.

• That we should respect the president because, even if we didn't vote for him, we're still one nation.

• That we should give our president an opportunity to lead by example.

Obama's presidency is still young. We don't know what shape his legacy will take. But given his resume, regardless of politics, he's an excellent role model on the value of education. Why not give him a chance to serve in that capacity?

kornhouse, I'm not gonna go on and argue with you about politics. I just think that the Obama Administration is one of the most underhanded that this country has seen.

Did anyone else get the feeling he was trying to discourage kids from doing their best at sports and focus only on school even if they're highly talented athletically? I know there needs to be a balance between the two but kids should still be able to make a living off something they truly enjoy when they get a little bit older if they can. It shouldn't be a wasted opportunity when they could have gotten a basketball scholarship then go on to the NBA or something and get endorsements and make money that way if they work hard at sports. To me it sounded like they should throw those dreams out the window and work their butts off in school to make the schools look better and then they think after all that work after college that a job will be readily available to them if they're qualified and hard working which is not the case, especially in today's economy.

kornhouse, I'm not going to get into how retarded that statement is, people shouldn't play sports and hope to become professionals, I don't think you realize the % of college athletes who actually become pro, thats not what college is for, closed minded people like you constantly amaze me at the statements they make but hey its free speech so go for it Smile

triggamike, Laughing

what about the lower class kids that are slow learners who have nothing to look up to other than playing a pro sport one day? The ones that cant afford college unless they get scholarships. they shouldn't have "Hope"? wasn't that one of obamas slogans "Hope"
I know you guys are talking about pro athletes. But its not just about that, Its about getting into college as well.

mike did you ever play any sports in highschool?

btw, before you guys climb up my butthole and stereotype me as an obama hater, I like obama and think he's a smart guy and has a lot good ideas for some reform.

I'm done in this thread we all know who's political views are what and its just gonna be another on of those threads which = a waste of time.

EJazzle, come on bro lets have fun. those kids should have hope but its getting to the point where it takes more than being good at sports to succeed. think about how many pro athletes there are compared to the people just in the us. i think that if these "lower class kids" rely on just sports and continue to not worry about education it gives them false hope.

The original plan for the speech was to be about "ways you can help President Obama" meaning us kids need to succeed in school and not be graded as C and D schools so that we look better as a country maybe even hold a candle to Chinese kids Smash and then like I said that's just how I perceived part of his speech and it's meaning, it may not have been how he intended for it to be.

Everyone has their own interpretation, but mine was much more optimistic than to think Obama's speech to students was solely to benefit himself. Obama will be long gone out of office when the kids his speech was geared toward do anything worth something for this nation. Meaning his speech was to actually benefit the future of this country. Unheard of, I know Very Happy

This isn't the first time he's tried to lead by example, I really like this aspect of this Administration. We haven't had this sort of presidential guidance for a long time.

Guess you guys are too young to remember president Bush (the first Bush, G.H. Bush, not GW) giving a similar speech. I wonder what Fox news was saying about that speech.. compared to how they cried like sissies about Obama's speech.
