|
|
I just read about it a few minutes ago, holy crap it's nuts! I'm scurred.
The U.S. government declared a public health emergency.
The outbreak "is of great concern to the White House," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, but, he added, "It's certainly not a time to panic."
"If you're sick, stay home, get treatment, go see a doctor," Gibbs told reporters. "The government is taking all the steps it needs to and must do to take the precautions to deal with whatever size and scope we may be facing," he said.
So what's going on?
Mexico City shut down all it's schools and Universities this weekend until "to be announced" because of this new outbreak. And several European nations have put high travel warnings for anyone coming to the United States or Mexico because we seem to be the epicenter of where the disease is beginning to spread from. Korea and Russia are even testing the temperature of ALL passengers that get off a plane from the USA and Mexico before letting them enter the country. Also, a class full of students that returned from Mexico was quarantined in their home country in Europe and almost half the students have it.
What is Swine Influenza?
It's "pig flu" and pigs are the main host. However, strains of Swine Influenza virus can also be directly transmissible to humans, and back to pigs again.
How dangerous is it really?
Swine Influenza is like a really bad version of the flu in humans. It was responsible for the human outbreak in 1918-1920 that killed more than 20 million people over the world (Spanish flu). A recent strain has also been responsible for an outbreak in 1976. So far it seems like several hundred people have died, but the reports are scattered and the data isn't solid but pigs frequently get the disease... but in humans the disease is much more severe causing viral pneumonia that is often fatal.
Symptoms
The symptoms are similar to the common flu and may lead to pneumonia. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
It's on the homepage of World Health Organization if you want more info

Pigs always get this strain of influenze, like every year, but most survive, though sometimes the piglets die from it. But every now and then it transfers to humans. No one knows where exactly it originated but it could have been any farm, but since the most reported cases have been in the USA, followed by Mexico, USA is the epicenter.
USA 40
Mexico 26
Canada 6
Spain 1
Keep in mind these are "confirmed" cases where they test in a lab to confirm the influenza strain matches. There are hundreds if not thousands of other people with these symptoms reporting over the last week but they've not been confirmed through lab testing and could be the regular flu.
It seems like gloom and doom but most people survive it... though it's a lot worse than your typical flu so it's a lot more dangerous to anyone who has a weaker immune system. _________________ chance favors the prepared mind

Everyone needs to calm down about this, it's the same as the bird flu a few years ago. Like taku said people survive it your probably more at risk if you are immunodeficient, i.e. AIDS, cancer chemotherapy patient. Also remember that the overall level of health care standards in Mexico are nowhere near what they are here in the US. The biggest problem with this type of thing is CNN hyping it up to get air time and freaking people out, and remember there are alot of stupid people out there... alot. _________________

gatorskater, thank you for bringing up bird flu. Fvck the media. While I agree in the fact that it's something people have to watch out for, it's blown WAY out of proportion, yet again. |

From the CDC:
"Laboratory testing has found the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir and has issued interim guidance for the use of these drugs. CDC also has prepared interim guidance on how to care for people who are sick and interim guidance on the use of face masks in a community setting where spread of this swine flu virus has been detected. This is a rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide new information as it becomes available."
World Health Org changed the Swine Flu level increased it to a 4:

That's the kicker, they aren't killing pigs to contain this issue.. it's spreading human to human right now
