here are 3 concave decks i recently finished. The spider web is actually hand cut grip tape.. not painted; unfortunately it cracked so i cant ride it anymore Sad The one on the left i call a split-tail, solid deck in the middle and gaps in between the tails. (patent pending!)

Great work!! That grip must have taken a while! Looks great though! Any pics of the concave on the far right one? Looks like a fun board and the scorpion theme is pretty cool too!

I was honestly thinking about that "Split-Tail" idea earlier today and wondering if it would work! I guess so!

How did you make them?? Did you use the same press for all of them and how did you do the split tail?

Need more homemades on here guys!

heres a couple concave pics of the "scorpion" and a few more of the split tail before it was finished.
all 3 decks were made on the same wood press, i pressed the split tail last because i had to modify the press to allow for more space around the tails. to make the split i didnt epoxy the nose and tail section between the middle plys so i could drive a spacer in between.

Im in love with that "scorpion"!!!!! Looks beautiful! Looks a lot like a New! Any pics of it without tape? sorry.. thats exactly how i plan to make mine if i ever get off my ass and do it!

And whats with the sides/concave things on the split-tail? It looks like you cut out and then added a larger piece for something..? Looks sick though!

What kind of wood are they made out of? Birch? How much did the jig cost and the price of 1 board? Thanks!

it pops nicely, but I over rounded the edges so its doesnt handle well as far as cutting back and forth, i plan on re shaping them just havent gotten around to it. also I made it 39" to help cut down on weight, but i feel its too short for me ( I'm 6'3") so as it is right now i rate it a 6 out of 10, with a little modification i think it could be a 7.5, if i end up pressing another i have some ideas of how to improve the design. not bad for a first try though..

counterpart,
i used the 1/8" birch plys , but i dont recommend using that stuff beacause the middle of that plywood isnt birch, its garbage wood. im switching to 1/16" so my decks are solid hardwood all the way through.. much stronger! the cut outs on the split tail you're talking about are just because i had to piece the top sections together because i was running out of wood. and sorry no pics of the scorpion w/o the grip.

as far as costs, $25 for the press, $150 for the epoxy (for all 3 boards), $20 for the birch plywood, $40 for the clamps, $60 misc supplies (sand paper, brushes, paint, blades, grip etc.)

Thank you! I really want to make a board soo bad! Finally have a little $$ i can put into this.

Whats the best kind of glue for these? Im thinking some kind of marine grade epoxy rite? Any popular name brands? Also, Whats a good sealant or should i seal it with the epoxy? And is there any way to Stain the board before sealing it? I was thinking a nice dark or cherry deck would look sick! Would it bleed with the epoxy?

Thanks!
