My boss is selling this jon boat with trailer for 800 bucks... It needs a new clip on motor, battery, and fuel cell. Then I think it would be ready to roll. Its a 16 footer with about a 5 and half foot beam. Just curious what size engine would it need to haul a skater and a few fellows? Or if it is even worth making into a skate rig?

Definite Skate rig. Prolly about a 35 hp tiller on it. a 25 might work depending on the weight of the boat.

Draft looks a little deep for anything lower than a 40 for pulling...

Well he told me he wanted 800 for it but would take less. it has a engine but it needs work. i think its only a 25 hp any way.

Bromfutter... Ill have to try and locate that coast guard tag. Didnt looking over to much today. he just told me to pull it out cuz he wants to sell it.

So a fifty should be plenty you guys think?

Any suggestions when it come to clip on motors?

yeah the draft does look a little deep...it looks like a flat bottom but a pretty deep one...so you're gonna need quite alot of power. and get a longer fuel line so you can put the fuel tanks up front near the bow. helps ALOT with planing out.

The engines are more expensive than i expected. might need to look into getting the engine with it fixed....

so with such a deep draft i wonder would a 40hp even be enough?

Save your money and buy a used jet ski, $800 is not worth it + the cost of the motor. Just find an older sea doo that hasn't sat around too long or something, the price on those things drops so fast after a year or two.

gatorskater, Yeah but the I/O is so sick on little john boats plus if you get enough people on it you get a nice re-entry as well. They dont burn as much gas as jet-ski's if you get the right engine and they can hold more gear and people for an all around better time. To each his own though.

Yeah i like the idea of the jon boat so you can roll with more people and gear. Im sure i could get him to come off the price.

Im a budget baller.... Ive got Champagne dream's and a Milwaukee's best budget.

Rhino, start checking craigslist religiously! its pretty easy to find jon boat hulls of all types super cheap and some free. 90% of the asking price on used boats is because of the motor, and outboards aren't cheap. and if your boss doesn't want to lower the price by a lot, then just wait it out until he realizes that what he has ain't worth 800. clip on outboards usually only go up to 25hp after that they are all bolt on. also taking a closer look at the transom in the pics, looks like it doesn't have much bracing coming off of it so i doubt its rated for more than a 25hp so you might want to wait for something better to come along. good luck with the engine find and build.
