I have a project for psychology in which i have to make a powerpoint on "cultural perception of addiction". I'm not asking you guys to do the project for me...but where do you think would be a good place to start? Should i stick to just substance abuse or also focus on things such as oil/energy/etc...?

thanks

I'd say just stick to substance abuse for this one. Behavioral choices often impact many of the addictions that create diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. The concept is such a huge social norm as well, so it'll be good to talk about.

FenderBass37, yeah i think i'm going to relate the substance abuse to behavioral choices which are influenced by different parenting styles of many different countries... i.e. the typical US parent is very lax leading to their kids smokin on that ganja where as parents in places like china are incredibly strict about all aspects of their kids life. thanks alot man

DIE HIPPIE

though i would include addictions such as shopping and gambling

pot is not an addiction, so don't even include that in your paper or else i will find and kill you.

if you want a real addiction go look at things like crack and pills

Joke? I have plenty of friends who are addicted to pot, some have made some REALLY stupid decisions (like giving up their scholarships) so that they could smoke pot. People get addicted to anything and everything.

maybe a movie reference but not sure.

"Marijuana is not a drug. I used to suck dick for coke. Now that's an addiction. You ever suck some dick for marijuana?"

No, you don't do whatever you think will get you an A.... thats retarded... all you have to is present a point well.

And seriously, I went on a blow binge for about a month and it was easier to stop than to stop smoking cigarettes. though i did smoke cigs for almost 2 years

Dragon, yeah I have a friend that did the same, and I'm not going to deny that high people make questionable decisions, but pot is not physically addictive, though if things like gambling and shopping are addictive, smoking pot can be mentally addictive as well.
