is it possible to make a winch using a 6hp motor w/o a torq a verter? im trying to keep the cost down. what gearing would i need?

Yes! you need a centrifugal clutch, similar to those used on go-karts. The TAV does give you a smoother less jerky start, which is why alot of people use them. You want a gear ratio of about 1:6 (ie. 10teeth on the clutch, 60 teeth on the spool) with a spool diameter of about 6-8 inches.

You cant beet buying a Honda or other decent make engine, if you really wanna save money and hassle.

Buy a 6.5 Honda knock off from harbor freight I got mine for $120 and it has been running like a champ for a year.

well its a honda 6hp so where can i find out about a centrifugal clutch, im really new with the small motor business lol. u think ill be able to go 20mph on a set up like whats been mentioned? thx

Yup 20mph should be about the speed you'll get too.

ok i just got my hands on an 18hp!! which should i use? the 6 or the 18? weight isnt a problem cuz its getting wheels
