I didn't check dave's link, but if it hasn't been suggested already, I'd also recommend spybot. It's a more aggressive spyware removal program (that is also free), and it will catch some cookies and things that ad-aware won't. I personally run both programs...

And AVG for virus protection which is also free but you will have to remove/uninstall Nortons or Symantec first.

I recommend AntiVir over AVG, but AVG is still good...

you can get Antivir at http://www.free-av.com
also run spybot and adaware like everyone else already said... just don't have more than one antiviruses at the same time... (spybot and ad-aware aren't antiviruses, so it's okay to have both of them on top of AVG or AntiVir)

I use both Norton and AVG...they work really well together, for me atleast...

I also use Spybot S&D, which is an excellant program, as well as HijackThis.

NoPidy, it could be hardware related.

i don't know why i don't post more in this forum. malware/spyware can screw so much stuff up QUICKLY, it's unreal how many problems it causes. 90% of pc work i do is due to spyware alone, viruses come in second.

for people that don't have a virus protectant, google AVG and download the free version.

also download spywareblaster(latest version) and enable all protection and updates, it does a pretty good job of preventing malware to reaching your pc.

Spy Sweeper is the highest rated spyware and adware removal program, but you have to pay like $30 a year for the subscription. I use it and I never get any pop ups or malicious downloads. Oh and, McAffee sucks, get Trend Micro's pccillin, I've had both. Norton is OK too. Surprised

Trey, why pay when you can use a few freeware programs to do the same thing? plus you don't have to run adaware or spyboy S&D in the background taking up resources(memory or ram for the illiterate). spyware takes up quite a few resources if i'm not mistaken(i could be wrong).

to each their own but free>all.

i use a combo of adaware and spywareblaster and i get maybe 5 cases picked up a week. i always have AVG running except when gaming.

contact me if you need help.

urinal mint, because the free applications don't have the resources behind them to catch everything. Those who write malicious code are always one slight step ahead, and SpySweeper automatically updates daily with new spyware definitions. And You are correct, if you have less than 512RAM, it will slow your computer down immensely. It is definitely worth the price if you have a cable modem and a home wireless network, and the RAM.
