well, when I had my first lesson on a snowboard, it did help to put a little bit more weight on my front foot (as I was instructed). if you put (or if I had put) too much weight on my back foot, i would slide out into a stop. but now the weight distribution is pretty much equal.
col101, for the board sizing you're going to need to look at the sizing chart. they will be different depending on the type of board you buy. the beginner boards are still quality, but they're going to be softer because it makes it easier for beginners to pick up the techniques and such. As boards go up in ability level, they become stiffer and the weight ranges adjust as well.
I should edit that: the beginner board by the respectable companies are still quality--ride, burton, nitro, rome, etc. some of the brands have totally shiznackle boards. make sure, at the very least, you're getting a board with a 100% wood core. the shiznackle companies will use plastic filler in the nose and tail and wood in between the bindings.
I'm confused, are you actually buying a board or renting? _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

yeah for the learning process... most ppl tend to lean back as a "brake" this is a no no when learning to snowboard, cause you just take off, correct?
im now at the comfort level where weight distribution is how i want it, when i want; butters and such and i can shift weight to account for terrain changes.
the one thing when i learned that made me "get it" was my friend tellin me to put my weight on my front foot. but that could just be me. _________________ R.I.P. JT- we all know you're slayshin up above, smack the lip off a cloud for us!

you probably did when you were a beginner. it is the easier method when you are just starting out. i have been snowboarding for maybe 5 years, and i used to be dependant on the front foot, then after i got more comfortable i could put more weight on my back foot. and now i do it about 50/50. i really only use my front foot for nose scooters now. im not a park rat so i get out there and shred the hill more.
col101, the only real similarity from wakeskating/boarding to snoboarding is you gotta remember to keep the board right under you on rails, because if you are unexperienced you can slip out easily.
and always, when you are hitting a part where 2 runs merge, watch for other people so you dont hit em, ive body checked a few too many people on some hills. they get pissed off. |

if you are buying a board go for gnu. I love my carbon high beam. Pretty cheap but great quality. They come in all sizes too. Look for a sizing chart and you can figure out what size board then. _________________ Some people make birdhouses, some people knit sweaters. I star in high-quality pornographic films.
