My first post was neither here nor there with regards to the changes at hyperlite (read: no subtext--take it for what it is). With that said, I'd prefer someone who actually has an interest and experience in this industry running it. In the end...I kind of don't care. I'm not a hyperlite fan, I don't buy their stuff, and with paul and herb gone, I can't see it as remaining at the top of the industry. But those are just my thoughts.

I guess time will tell, but I"m not super bent or anything. There are other companies and people that i"m more interested in at this point in time. And all of you kids on here hate them anyway, so let's be honest--could they possibly have made a good move that would have made you happy? I'd say probably not, and this whole issue is just more message board fodder.

get over it grouch. grubb was never sponsored by nautica.

Actually, answer me this: what negative effects has wakeskating had that can be DIRECTLY attributed to a three year old commercial that ran on MTV?

now im not 100% sure but for one, wouldnt being in the comercial make you "sponsored" by them? I'm sure that wasn't done for free. And before that came about, wasn't he in nautica adds? not wbm nautica adds, im talking like girly mags, like cosmo or 17 or whatever there called now.

and as for the new guy at hype... im sure that a big marketing guy will not take up more and more of the budget Rolling Eyes (takeing away from desiging/quality)<----not to say they had much of this.

you guys are idiots. it's a business decision. and trust me it was probably a good one. if you are not old enough to drive please dont respond. the other 10% of posters on this site please think before you post. should they give the position to byerly? sure he knows tons about how to run an international business that deals with everything from tubes to pogo sticks. he'd "keep it real." i want you all to think about how much you hate hyperlite for making boards in china. 1st turn down your IPod, or did you leave it in your Honda Civic or Toyota Truck. trust me, if other companies could afford the initial move to have their products made overseas they would too. also, people change companies like that all the time.

TTUFAN24, Some Honda's and Toyota's are made here in the USA while some "American" cars are made overseas. So what's your point?

TTUFAN24, not every industry runs the same way. sure the guy can run billion dollar companies that market to everyone worldwide, but the hypelite is not a billion company marketing to everyone around the world. maybe he can do it, maybe he can't. only time will tell. all i know is that i wont go back to the local skatepark after non-skaters were put in charge and turned the park gay.

btw, i dont know if this was already mentioned but nike is pretty big in the skate industry and adidas makes skate shoes too. I have also seen quite a few nike ads in recent WBM. Maybe the companies arent that unrelated?

Greg, being sponsored means you're endorsing something, at and times, getting paid to endorse it (photo incentives, etc). Brian was sought out by nautica to do their first commercial, while still being on billabong's team. (which, interestingly enough, was worked out so he could actually do that commercial and not have a conflict of interest. OMG! Billabong sucks!!! OMG, they're ruining wakeskating too!!!) In fact, he had to make it like he wasn't riding for nautica because of his billabong contract.

Originally it was going to be a wakeboarding commercial, but they saw wakeskating and liked it much better. You could say he was doing stunt work, I guess. I mean, I work at a department store and I get paid. Does that mean they sponsor me?

And no, he wasn't in any print ads.

And what makes this whole fiasco oh-so-interesting is the fact that he was not allowed to have any sponsor logos present in the commercial. So, considering the fact that his deck was blank (no graphics from hype, or even a company that's cool to wakeskating like red bull), only a watersport fan (someone who's already in the industry) would know what kind of board he was riding.

Finally, you can't blame their boards (hype's) being made overseas on this new guy. The move was initially made in 02 or 03, and it began with their wakesurf boards and some lower end boards. With that said, what do their china antics have to do with this new guy? It's nothing new. And just to play the devil's advocate, this would be a lose-lose situation. Hyperlite was shizzle to all of you critics when paul and herb were there (at least they were actually participants in the industry they worked in, but that still wasn't good enough), and boards were made in china while both were there. And seriously, if someone well respected would have stepped up to the plate and would have gotten this guy's position, he would have been a sell-out.

Finally, regardless of who the new CEO could have been, do you really think hyperlite would have turned into some "core" company? You all would have been bitching either way. The only thing that would ever silence the critics is if they went out of business.

I'm not on hyperlite's side (so don't even try to assume that, because you'd be wrong). But I do hate arguments that lack logic, and half of the bad things people mentioned about hyperlite have been going on for years. Hyperlite will always BE Hyperlite...

Man, I almost forgot. Two legendary skaters, mark gonzales and lance mountain both skate for adidas. That shizzle baffles me, but mark is still one of my favorite skaters, and I'll always have respect for lance. Two dudes that run their own companies and do their own artwork...

electricsnow, ya i could really give a f*ck less if grubb is in a comercial or not, but i really do think he was in a print ad. but thats not really the point of any of this.

but as for most people hateing hype, it seems like more or less the lack of quality and inovative designs that they claim they have. if you look at who is respected, its cassette (very inovative) integ (also very inovative) and it seems like a lot of intrest is comming behind omen. then the companys people hate would be 484, mutiny (after they f*cked over schmalts or whatever happened), probably going to be whoever is rippin off omen, and hype. so i think if hype would have put someone like shawn murry or byerly or someone else that is respected in the industry then the comunity would have a different story. or atleast would be intrested to see if the quality and design would be better. also this all seems like a kent sports decision. <not trying to put up a fight or anything just bored at work and saying what i think>

I agree with most of your post (and I respect it as well) and I don't interpret it as "putting up a fight at all".

Anyway, One main reason I'm not into hyperlite is that lack of innovation thing. A number of key features on their decks came from other companies' hard work (and not just from wakeskates, but that's the easiest example at this point). I guess on the flip side (to give byerly a fair break), he may think that his version of the 4-trac fin configuration could be the best thing ever. I don't know, but you get the picture. And I was definitely a pissed off camper when rumors were going around that hyperlite was working on a bi-level right after cassette unveiled theirs ("Don't get me started, don't EVEN get me started!"--Ms Jeanie Darcy)

And even if someone like shaun murray could handle such a position, I'd be willing to bet that most of the people on here would still scream "sell out." And that's why I think hyperlite would lose on this forum either way. But again, that's just my opinion. ("DON'T get me STARTED!"--Ms Jeanie Darcy)

Interestingly enough, some dude on wakeworld did some snooping and radar wakeboards seems like something that's going to be realistic...the web address for that website was registered under high output sports, which is/was the HO/hyperlite distributor for can-eh-da. So, you know, while people worry about hyperlite and their radness, other moves are being made. It should be interesting to see what comes from all of this... ("Don't get me started, Don't get me started!--Ms Jeanie Darcy)

TTUFAN24, I agree with what you say more than what most of the other people have been saying in this topic.

Hyperlite's not core, they don't seem to try to be. If they are going to try and make money, that's what they are going to do. This guy hired seems to have a decent track record with running big companies. There is a reason why companies in other industries last even if they don't make good products.

Don't take this the wrong way, I don't like (from what I've tried) and am not interested in Hyperlite's products I'm not a supporter, I would rather support the innovators of the sport. But as a business decision, this was probably pretty good on Hypes part. It's not like he's going to ignore the people that have been with Hype for a long time and just tell everyone to do it his way, that's definitely not going to work. And if he does do that, he will just run the company into the ground.

For the people complaining that this guy isn't into wakesports, give me a break... he's not designing the products. Take TTUFan's advice and turn down your Apple Ipod, you all need to turn off your M$ Windows computers, actually, probably 99% of all your electronic equipment is made in a sweatshop in Asia anyway, no more electronics, stop getting your groceries at Wal-Mart... I could go on and on, these companies are no better in practice than what Hyperlite is, if not worse. Rolling Eyes

I know probably none of you agree with me at all, but whatever, I like to go to the lake and ride my wakeskate, if you wanna join me, that's where I'll be (actually I won't b/c it's freaking cold outside and my sea doo is 500 miles south of here, but you get the picture).

Thank god you said that, i think alot of you forget about the actual sport of wakeskating sometimes and are more worried about stupid crap that is inevitable. Just go out and ride and get your heads outa your ass, and yes ill be the first to admit i do this sometimes.anywho peace
