Hey bmr,
you're right about one thing.... someone has exactly the same problem - me. I'm running 7" spool with 10t - 54t , so ratios are about the same.
Difference is i'm on a honda 8hp, but ...

I had it a year now and just noticed that the driver wheel - the one with the 10t sprocket on it - has an adjustment.
The green spring that sits inside the wheel can be put in 3 differe ...

@ MOJO - Cheers, I guess more torque is good for deep starting....

a lot of spools use cutting discs with good results,
we used 2 kart brake discs which are plenty strong enough and not
too expensive either, plus they're easy to mount to an axle

that video is a bit old now, we just narrowed the spool to only 7" but it just seems to have slowed it down a bit too much, is a smaller drum the right way to go? The trouble with ...

Thanks Montgomery, sounds like just the same problem as me.

I can refit the 10/60 easy enough, and making the spool smaller feels like the right thing to do, but taking an inch and a half off the ...

We built this winch, and it works great but it just wont deep water start us.
On dry land it'll pull a land board at over 20mph, but its just too damn slow to get planning on the wate ...

Looks neat, pretty well made.
I would only worry that it might not be strong enough to cope with pulling an adult weight from a deep start.
We used 2 brake discs joined with 6 Massive steel b ...
