I've always strapped my winch to a tree. It has always been convenient.
What other methods are you guys using to secure your winch?

i use straps, stakes, or pile rocks in front of it. plus the legs on the front of my winch dig into the ground so that helps to. or i leave it in my trailer hitch, thats the nice thing about owning a lifted jeep, you can 4wheel in to awsome spots to ride at.

I bought a pair of screw anchors (auger anchors?). They're like this but the ones I found are more heavy duty. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200312319_200312319
You can secure the winch anywhere you can get the screws in the ground. You have to make sure to dig down to harder packed sand if you want to use em on the beach though (my winch got loose on me once )

I use 3 ft 1"x1" steel rods as stakes if i can't leave it in the hitch or strap it too a tree.

We bought three 18inch long chisels, they go into to ground nice, then you can tie the racket straps around them, served us well and don't move an inch!

I use the steel stakes contractors use to hold concrete molds in place, it's crazy I find them all over town so I've never had to pay for one, my design allows for a single stake to hold the winch in place, I can show you how to mod your winch really cheap so you can too, other times I've used 2 ratcheting straps which work very well too

I've never really understood using numerous stakes...
I just hammer a 3 ft. crow bar into the ground and tie the winch to it. Simple and effective. It just seems numerous stakes is overkill.

3/4" piece of steel rod, 2' long, with a sharp tip and a couple washers weleded to the top so you can beat on it. but, if you build your winch with wheelbarrow handles on the front it keeps it from flipping up and you can use less to tie it down or anchor it in...
