Things like this reconfirm my decision to vote for the man last year and make me interested in politics again. Reading the article actually made me feel a little tingly about being American again.
This selection by Obama tells me he's really attempting to reconcile relations with China (not just talking about it) and it's a huge step IMO, even if nothing has happened yet it shows a lot of promise. So what, politics can be nerdy, but it's also totally bada$$american for a change

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama announced Saturday that his choice for U.S. ambassador to China is moderate Republican Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who expressed some surprise at the appointment.
Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has an adopted daughter from China. He was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2008, and cannot run again due to term limits.
A national co-chairman of Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, Huntsman said he didn't expected "to be called into action by the person who beat us. But I grew up understanding that the most basic responsibility one has is service to country," the 49-year-old governor said at the White House, just after Obama's announcement.
"When the president of the United States asks you to step up and serve in a capacity like this, that to me is the end of the conversation and the beginning of the obligation to rise to the challenge."
Obama said he knew Huntsman's decision to take the job "wouldn't be the easiest decision to explain to some members of his party." But he said Huntsman "is the kind of leader who puts country ahead of party" and "is always willing to sacrifice on behalf of our nation."
"Throughout his career, Jon has shown a willingness to move beyond the old ideologies and stale debates that all too often bring progress to a standstill," Obama said.
Obama said Huntsman will bring a respect for China's traditions to the job. A White House statement issued just before the formal announcement was made said Huntsman's "long service to the country also prepares him well to be frank with our Chinese friends when we disagree on human rights, democracy, and other matters."
Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, David Plouffe, described Huntsman as "the one person in that [Republican] party who might be a potential presidential candidate," U.S. News and World Report magazine reported earlier this month.

Throwing money at problems doesn't seem like a good leader to me. I believe that companies should fail if in trouble no matter how big they are. It allows for evolution of new growth into a stronger economy. |

the first 350billion was the bush admin. henry paulson said i want this money , no strings attached so it was impossible to track what banks were doing with it. the second 350 is under obama's admin and there is an agency that tracks what is happening. i agree we should have let them fail like any other business, but b/c of the situation we are/were in all this money was needed. though obama spends 100 billion a month he has mentioned our deficit and wants to eventually get it lower. really all of this started in 1979 w/ the repeal of regulations, and then under clinton trying to be a middle of the road guy appealing to republicans. it's a very complicated issue that nobody really knows how to actually solve. trial and error seems to be what we are doing. _________________ "I said take me to the sea, cause that is where I want to be. idk yet...
I will say that I am a bit disappointed with some of Obama's budget cuts to the NASA/Aerospace programs. They are such a large part of the economics of central Florida and Brevard County(where I live), in particular. I don't think that it will ever get shut down but, they've been working on a lot of those projects for along time, and to just throw it out the window seems like a waste. We'll just have to wait and see where he takes us with the space program. _________________

mojo, I liked that he couldn't give the graduation speech at Notre Dame because he believes in abortion though. Stuck to his guns on that one. |

TWG, Yeah I just heard that on the news a few seconds ago. He'll still have to address his thoughts on abortion though while he is there I bet. |

I've been under a rock, what is the controversy about abortion vs giving a speech at ND? _________________ chance favors the prepared mind |

Care to explain? I'm not a supporter ofOobama at all, but I'd be curious to hear your reasoning. That whole administration is just as bad, if not worse, than the last one. Just take a look at that b*tch Nancy Pelosi and Obama's appointment to head the CIA. Ahh! I don't even want to think about it! _________________

taku, Notre Dame is a Catholic college. Catholic's are hardcore pro-life. Obama supports pro-choice. That is the problem. _________________ -Jordan Schwaller

For even more LOL, saw this snippet from Michael Steele's (chairman of the Republican National Committee) "re-start campaign".
Quote: | The Republican Party has turned a corner, and as we move forward Republicans should take a lesson from Ronald Reagan. Again, we’re not looking back – if President Reagan were here today he would have no patience for Americans who looked backward. Ronald Reagan always believed Republicans should apply our conservative principles to current and future challenges facing America. For Reagan’s conservatism to take root in the next generation we must offer genuine solutions that are relevant to this age. |
