I thought uber alles was german.

Also, when you look at the lyrics to "california uber alles" there appears to be a number of allusions about germany/nazi germany. But I don't know much about the history of jerry brown, so maybe he was a nazi sympathizer or something...whatever. I like that song a lot though.

More interesting facts:

über alles” was adopted as the German national anthem after World War I.

Boy, I should know better than to take things like that literally (allusions). But, it's always a theory to pursue and then debunk...

Here's something about the dead kennedy's song"...their first single - "California Uber Alas" - presented California's progressive, liberal governor Jerry Brown as a kind of hippie Hitler."

Does anyone care? And this kind of went off topic...so as a moderator, I might have to move my own post to the "I can't stay on topic" thread.

DK is where most people know the phrase from, so its not off the topic at all.

well, I was kind of focusing more on the interpretation of the song and not the actual phrase "uber alles." But if you say it's ok, then it stays!

Interesting point jerrysk8...and I'd have to agree with you if it were true. In general, I don't think uber alles is a nazi supremacy reference, but if hitler had anything to do with it becoming a part of the german national anthem, then you never know. But if it did have that subtext, you'd think germany would have scrapped it after world war II....but who knows. again, good point.

Just because something is German dosent make it Nazi. Uber Allis is simpley a German phrase not a Nazi phrase. Nazis ate bratwerst that dosent mean that it is now Nazi sausage!

Just for clarification, I was referring to the possiblity that uber alles in the german national anthem could have possibly had nazi undertones (provided that hitler had something to do with that), and not uber alles in general. After re-reading my post, I can see how it could be misleading.

I live in Switzerland but I'm german.
"Deutschland über alles" means "Germany above all". It's the german national anthem.
Erich: I know that "Integrity über alles" has nothing to do with Hitler and the Nazis but, here in Europe, the "über alles" expression is still a very touchy topic...
