|
|
So I finally got our winch built. (pictured below). However, our initial test run did not go so well.
Problem: When i begin to move the throttle lever towards the "rabbitt" (faster speed, more throttle), it begins to pull the rider, but by the time i am at full throttle, the engine dies.
I talked to my paaps who is good with this stuff and he suggested a couple things:
- the clutch is somehow too much for the engine, maybe take a spring out or something along those lines
-also suggested that it may be the govenor.
6.5 hp Engine
TAV 2 - 12 tooth
Sprocket up top is 72 tooth
Input needed.....please.

Is the engine brand new or used? Is it weak when it pulls or just dies at full throttle?
This site is good for troubleshooting engine and TAV problems: http://www.gokartsupply.com/trouble.htm
Its hard to say without seeing it but the combination of having your rope spool in at such a large angle and a larger sprocket could make it run slower.

that spool is hot, simple and basic yet defined. You're dirty.

how big is your inner diameter of the spool... you might be puttin too much force on the engine....
also is the spool winding up from the bottom of the spool?

engine is brand new. It just dies when i give it full throttle.
The spool came from Northern Tool and it is a "hose reel for a commercial hose". That is 600ft on the spool.
Jeff - Inner diameter is 6". Yes, the rope is coming in from bottom.
ps - we are painting the frame

Well atleast it is a engine. It is strong enough.
The rope comes in from the bottom because of the TAV > The TAV would not mount in the "normal" position. So we had to rotate it 180 degrees, thus causing the TAV to spin in that direction.
i.e. - the rope will not come in from the top.
Also, when we tried it today. My truck was parked at a steep angle, so there wasn't that much pressure, or difference in angle, of the rope in relation to the rope guide.
Hope that makes sense...

jsimpson7, yea all tavs dont fit right at first... but you really dont want the tav sittin like that... flip is around and grind down the back alittle bit until it fits... then you can wind it up from the top... as for the spool... generally you want something alittle bigger for a inner diameter (7 or 8 in)... especially since your only runnin a 6.5 hp engine ...
flipping the engine around should take alot of load from the engine... is that a 72 tooth sprocket?
i have a feeling its an engine malfunction though... although the aboved mentioned will help i doubt it is the root cause... i would say you need to break in your engine more... try letting it idle and warm up a while and then change the oil... new engines tend to take a while to break in and run at full capacity... after you break it in and change the oil lemme know if it runs any better

Maybe thats the problem. One time I was running my winch on an angle that wasn't too bad I thought but it was dying. Does it do the same on level ground?
Grind the tav down on the "supports" where its needed and make it fit the other way so it spools in the from the top. You'll deffinately notice a difference in Power one you get the engine running properly I think.
You might need a water shield in front of the engine and driver if you do it that way tho judging by the pics.

jsimpson7, ill tell u something that may sound stupid, but my engine would do the same thing if i was parked on a really big incline or decline. try to park the truck on a flat surface and try again that may help
