so i finally made it down there to try it.. i rode for about an hour and a half. my first thoughts when i get there was to see like stoked young adults running the place...people that rode..well i got there and it just seemed to me that its just a total money money place...they five dollar you to death, forgot my towel and they wanted to sell me one for 5 dollars....forgot my helmet and they wanted 10 bucks to rent one....10 bucks for a helmet? they are only 30 bucks to buy. the price to ride was not bad, and the guys who were running the cable were nice and helpful. i have been riding for years behind a boat and skis and winches, but never the cable. they were quick to give me tips to get used to it faster. i rode alot.. had the whole place to myself. after about 20 minutes on the beginner side i moved over to the rail park, and it was much better, faster and easier to land shizzle. i hit some of the rails and got owned a few times to. so all in all it was fun. just dont like the vibe of the whole place.
any other people had the feeling the first time they went there? |

| just seemed like so foreign owned. not that i have a problem at all with people from other countries. but just i feel like a place like that should be run by a local boarder...i guess i am just used to all the surf shops around my way. all local owned and operated by surfers.....just my thoughts |

Here's my thoughts on OWC so far. The people have been nice but they need to get with the times, in this economy they need to have more happy hours special. Like an early bird special for the first hour, on weekdays, they have a wed. night half price special but it's crowded. 10 bucks to rent a helmet is ridiculous, they should rent them for 1 or 2 dollars an hour.
Most of the cable operators have been awesome, one guy even told me what I was doing incorrectly on my ollie 180s, I've only met operator who's uncool.
For me the thing that is awesome about OWC is, I purchased a 6 month pass for $450 (November special), I can go ride as much as I want, anytime they are open (that brings the price down to $75 a month) If you compare that to most other sports It's really cheap. Compared to Snowboarding, it's practically free. I have only been wakeskating for three weeks in total and OWC is where I am learning, for me having a place I can ride over and over again will help me build fundamental skills which I really like.

i have always had a good time at OWC. I guess it might be because i have been like 3 times and have always gone with a few friends. idk. but it seems like every time i go its really fun. i guess ive never really paid attention to the girl taking the money. but one of my good friends runs that cable a lot and he is one of the coolest people i have ever met.
But it seems like everyone else hates on it.
that box is my favorite thing to hit. _________________

I haven't been to other cable parks... But I can say that the vibe always feels different at OWC for me. Its probably because there's always different people there. Sometimes awesome and sometimes not so awesome.
Whereas price goes I agree to a certain extent. They will charge every $5 they can get (which will be a lesson for first timers). Bring a few towels, your own equipment, and a helmet and your set.
On their side, they are a business in a bad economy dealing with a sport that is not the most accesible to the entire public. They do obviously need to make money to stay in business.
I thought the guy that runs OWC was a rider? |

Just out of curiosity, how does it "feel foreign owned?"
Anyway, I went to odub once and I hated it because I sucked at riding the cable. Plus it was also really choppy. Other places have an island built in the middle of the lake that seems to cut that problem down. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

| it feels foreign owned because all three of the people who were working the counter pro shop and the rentals were all from the czech republic. and it just seemed to me that they are just the money hungry type of people. i spent 80 bucks there and they would not even give me a 2 dollar sticker to put on my boat.....thats where i knew i was not feeling it. |

I think it's all what you make of it. I've had a great time every time I've been at a cable park (OWC, Wake Nation, and Wet & Wild in Orlando).
Last time I rode at a cable park was at Wet & Wild in Orlando. My wife and daughter rode the kneeboards there most the day and I wakeskated there for two days. I had a great time. I never thought to get hung up on the "vibe" of the place, or the fact there aren't any rails or other obstacles in the water. Only thing to do there is flat water tricks and to olley over the booies. |
