My cell phone contract ended a few days ago so I'm free! Now I have to decide what to get next and think I found it. Sprint just announced the HTC Hero today for launch on Oct. 10. I'm pretty stoked for it. I'm a little dissappointed that the specs aren't exactly cutting edge but it's a killer Android phone for under $200 which makes me a happy camper.

If nothing else, this phone looks awesome because of the tweaked UI that HTC is putting on it. Plus the support for all available Android and google integration is boss (feel free to punch me in the face next time you see me for using that word/phrase).

Early reviews have said that the phone is kind of laggy but I'm hoping that's just a software tweak that needs to be made. Also, there's no hardware keyboard which bums me out a bit. I think I'm willing to make the jump to a touch-screen only phone for this device though.

Thoughts?

*Note: I am not here to bash the iPhone in any way, it's just not the right phone for me so please don't turn this in to a phone wars thread or tell me to get it instead of the Hero (although I'm open to other phone ideas)

HTC is pretty fvcking pro. As is Android OS. I have a G1 and it's perfect. Personally i don't think i could go touch-screen-only for any phone. But if you haven't looked into the G1 yet i'd recommend it especially since tmobile has a pretty good data plan for it for a pretty good price.

Slapdown, Believe me, I've been debating the G1 since it was released but I just got done with a brick-sized phone and didn't want another one. Android is the perfect platform for me (and I'm generally a fan of HTC hardware although the hero is super ugly in the US).

I'm pretty stubbourn about having a phone with an actual keyboard but I spent some time with the MyTouch on tmobile in the store and it's not that bad (plus I heard the keyboard is improved on the Hero). Have you seen HTC's 'Sense' UI? it's pretty slick.

BTW - Do you have the app. 'Carr Matey'? My friend has it and I think Android is worth if for that app alone, haha.

I had an HTC phone for a while and it sucked, it was very laggy and it froze up all of the time. I know that you said you don't want an iPhone but I think it is the best phone out there right now. My only problem with the iPhone is AT&T.

Wait a few months if you're thinking about the iPhone as a last resort- it's coming out on Verizon.

I *like* my 1st gen G1.. it's pretty cool, but browsing on it is relatively slow and annoying. I much prefer to browse on my iTouch.. it's probably 2 times as fast.

The apps for G1 are cool though, android is sweet, and the phone itself works like a champ, plus I love having a qwerty keyboard.. I couldn't have a phone without an actual keyboard. Camera is ok, but like most phones, you have to be perfectly still to get a good image.

My main complaint with it is pocket dialing.. which is easily fixed by locking the screen or just going back to the "home" screen after making/receiving a phone call. Still annoying though.

I really want Android because I run my life based on gmail and google calendars and Android phones are pretty much built to do that. The iPhone is just too restricted and doesn't offer what I need day-to day. Fart apps are cool, but I just want something open-ended and useful for productivity and customization (without jailbreaking, with my luck i'd break it).

GI rules...Get a sdhc class six, Root it and put Cyanigens Flash to it and that comes with Apps to SD (puts all your apps on the SD Card and with a class 6 its blazing fast) and then overclock the crap out of it 528MGZ and blow away iPhones and thier proprietary crap! We have all the same apps for free or less and you can use your your phone like you want to. We could print wireleslly, have MMS, tether, and run CC way before iPhone jumped on the wagon.....granted the downside is you have to filter through alot of BS apps to find the good ones. G1 since day modded to hell and back. BTW touchscreen keyboards suck....Used iPhone, Storm and the one on the G1....Full qwerty keyboard, I can type faster on my ohone than on the PC keyboard...And I can type!

And if you like the Hero UI you can mod to run that as well. I had it but it was laggy just like the Sprint phones are going to be. And I have 2 Lines with unlimited everything and after taxes my bill is 200 on the spot and it never wavers. Tmobile Customer service is the BEST and I have had them all over the years. Versizon Service is Great but the customer service isnt. Sprint Service sucks and thier customer service is good. Tmobile is good and great! (And Catherine Zeta jones might come to your door and offer you a mobile makeover...lets see how you feel when Verizon sends the guy in glasses!)

haha, ive been lookin for a cheap one,

i use my phone for calls... and alarm... and maybe to check what day it is.

i dont even have texting... people hate me.

I dont understand the people who have their like facebook notifcations pop up on their phone all the time... and shizzle like that....

but if i were to pick a phone, id pick the G1, i love that thing, (from what little time ive had to play with it) but the blackberry is cool too, and i like the speakers on it.

but ill stick to nokia Smile
